Canowindra’s Australia Day Twenty20 cricket match turned out to be a huge success with over $700 raised for the Jane McGrath Foundation.
In terms of the game the cricket boys proved to be far too strong for the Tigers rugby league side but a great day was had with a plenty of laughs and a good crowd to watch the game.
Tigers captain Sam O’Malveney won the toss and elected to bat but things didn’t start well for the Tigers with Mick Clyburn out in the first over.
Matt Mclean hit Rohan Toole for the first six of the day but Matthew Beaton soon removed him.
Captain O’Malveney then came to the crease and with housemate Shaun Craven bowling plenty was on the line for both boys but Craven won the battle bowling out Sam for only 1 with his second ball.
Craven then also took the prized wicket of new Tigers President Damien Kennedy for 0 in the same over.
Blake Willson steadied the ship for the Tigers for a short time hitting two boundaries in his 18 before falling to the bowling of Michael Traves. Simon Whatman batted well for his 14 and Nick Daly came out and showed he still has all his cricket skills making an impressive 28 including big sixes off strike bowlers Nick Guthrie and Alex Myers but even though the Tigers extended their batting line-up with a few ring-ins they could only manage scoring 100.
Matt Beaton and Alex Myers took three wickets each while Shaun craven and Brendan Traves taking two apiece. Openers for the cricketers Nick Traves and Matt Beaton started the chase well before Beaton was out for 23 and Traves 12.
Brendan Traves made 12 and then Peter Guthrie and Shaun Craven took to the Tigers bowling with Pete’s first three scoring shots going for four while Craven started with three fours and two sixes before he decided to run a single.
At the drinks break after 9 overs the cricketers had already passed the Tigers score and Pete retired on 38.
Nick Guthrie came out and hit 23 before also retiring as Craven fell, also scoring 38. Rohan Toole hit 17, Michael traves made 4 and Harry Whatman made 9 as their innings ended with the cricketers making and impressive 181.
At the end of the game three awards where handed out for the two best players on each team with Shaun Craven picking up the award for the cricket boys while Nick Daly impressed with bat and ball and was the winner for the Tigers.
The third award was for the moment of the day and that went to Josh ‘Bazza’ Blake from the Tigers for providing a few great moments but the highlight was his efforts in the field in particular the dropped catch that somehow landed on his shoulder.
Good on you Bazza.
A great day was head by everyone with plenty of laughs on the field. The winners of the raffles on the day were Linda Guthrie taking two and Dave Sargent and Gunna Stevenson winning the others.
A big thankyou must go to many businesses and people around Canowindra for their help. IGA donated the hamper for the raffle and the Butchery donated a meat tray while Sarah Cummings at the Shearing Shed donated a voucher and Ken Willson donating a car care kit.
The Bowling Club also donated all the alcohol for the day so a big thankyou must go to all these places as it’s always great when days like this receive help from the local community and the Cricket Club and Rugby League Club are very appreciative of your help. Kathy Davis, Barry Traves and Gary Whatman must also be thanked for being behind the counter serving drinks and food and handling all the donations.
Chris Cutty provided the marquee free of charge which was came in very handy during the rain that fell during the second half of the game and a big thankyou must also go to young Dan Friend who umpired the whole game.
Days like this wouldn’t be possible without people helping out so it’s always great to see people putting up their hand to assist.
This was a great day and it was great to see the Tigers Rugby League club join in this year and keep the Australia Day cricket match fundraising day going and with over $700 raised it was the most successful day since the game started four years ago for the great cause of the Jane McGrath Foundation.
