Our season is over and there was just one more thing to do to wrap up the year.
That was to have a presentation night. So last Friday we all gathered together again at the Services Club to show our appreciation to all the players and especially the ones who were to collect awards on the night.
The night was well attended by most players, a lot of supporters and most of our sponsors.
With yours truly being given the job of MC we got underway. A noticeable omission on the night was my sidekick Barry Burn.
Bazza was still on the car rally and couldn’t get back in time.
This was a shame because Bazza put in a huge effort right throughout the year helping me keeping the little darlings in line.
At the start of the year a coach could not be found for us, so with nil experience and not wanting to see the side fold the job was handed to the Banished Strapper.
Finally he could prove himself to outgoing coach Vinny the first training run came and the new coach let the girls know that he was their new leader for the year.
The girls had a little meeting and asked was I sure that there was no one else? I assured them that I was the best man for the positions and they eventually agreed that I was better than nothing.
Barry’s daughter Belinda was playing with us this year and so Bazza approached me and asked whether I minded him coming along to training to try and loose his spare tyre, and so the combination began.
Barry has a background of coaching junior league sides and he also used to play soccer back in the old days – when he had hair.
His help was invaluable all year and was always there to offer advice not only to me but to the girls especially at half time during the games.
A huge thanks from me and the girls to Bazza for all he did for us.
Well that’s enough about him, we don’t want his head getting any bigger.
Back to our presentation night, we had four major awards to be given out. The first award was for our best and fairest player. This went to Julia Carman.
The second award was for our player’s player, which also went to Julia Carman.
I can’t praise Julia enough for her efforts throughout the year. I christened her Miss Versatility during the year because she can play in any position.
Our third award was for our most improved and this went to Caitlin Walker. At only 14 she played well above her age and has a good future in soccer.
Our final award was for the club person of the year. The decision on who received this award was purely up to the coach and he based it on performance, skill, attitude and how the player gels with the rest of the team.
This year’s winner was Kylie Rush. Kylie is a very pleasant young lady with heaps of ability and hopefully she can be with the team next year.
With the presentation night over we can settle back and think of next year, which leads me to my next request.
This bunch of girls are a terrific prospect for next year an only need the guidance of an experienced coach who can teach them the way soccer is really played.
Anyone who is willing to take the job on should contact David Grant on 6344 1890 or Renae Nash.
The Redbacks had a very young side this year and can only get better.
From the Redbacks and coaching staff thanks for supporting us this year and look forward to seeing you next year.
Thanks for reading.
