Former Canowindra sports star Rhyan Grant, the son of Kay and Darryl Grant, could have a golden opportunity to secure himself a starting spot with glamour A-League club Sydney FC after the announcement of Steve Corica’s retirement.
Corica, whose career has come to a close after almost 20 years at the top level in Australia announced last week that he was calling time on his commitment to the club.
In season 2009-10, former Canowindra and Bathurst ’75 and Churches United star Grant has regularly been the man to replace the 36-year-old in the latter stages of their A-League fixtures, and would logically be among the first players to get a crack at Corica’s spot next season.
Filling the boots of such a colossal figure in Australian soccer – Corica has played 32 matches for his country and hold the all-time games record for Sydney FC with 106 appearances – will be no small task for Grant, but one he would love to have a crack at.
“I hope I get the chance,” he said.
“Steve’s retirement is definitely going to open up another spot in the starting line-up and I would love to be the one to fill it.”
There has also been intermittent speculation about the future of another Sydney start, John Aloisi, and while such a possibility is nothing more than talk, two empty spots in a Sydney FC starting side would almost certainly see Grant given a chance to make one spot his own.
“None of the staff have actually said anything to me about it yet,” Grant said.
“It is up to me to show why I can fill that hole and earn a starting spot. They [the staff] know that I can play a few different positions so now it is up to me to prove it.
