Canowindra soccer product Rhyan Grant is trying to earn a place at the London Olympics.
Grant is a member of the Australian Under 23s squad which will head to Tashkent to meet Uzbekistan on February 5.
Last month the Canowindra product played the final 20 minutes with Uzbekistan in their AFC Asian Qualifier for the 2012 London Games match played at Parramatta Stadium.
That game finished in a nil-draw as did the Young Socceroos’ earlier qualifiers against Iraq and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), which puts extra weight on their upcoming re-matches.
These teams, currently in the third round of qualifying, are vying for direct qualification for the London 2012 Olympic Games football competition by placing top of their pool.
If Grant and his team-mates fail to do this there is another, trickier path to take to London if they can place second in their pool.
The second-placed team will join runners-up from two other pools in a play-off and the winner will then meet the representatives of CAF (Africa) for a berth in the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Olyroos coach Aurelio Vidmar is disappointed that his side has not yet scored a goal.
“We get into those areas in front of the penalty area time and time again. We did that against Iraq time and time again. We’re probably lacking that little bit of extra finesse or the wall pass goes too long or the pass into the striker that instead of playing in front of him, actually hits him in the neck,” he said.
“It’s just those little small details in front of goal that have probably let us down over the last two games.
“Our next match is against Uzbekistan early next year. It’s going to be a tough away trip. However, I’m confident the boys will pull through.”
Following the re-match against Uzbekistan, Grant and his team-mates will face UAE on their home soil at Khalifa bin Zayed Stadium on February 22 before their final pool game against Iraq on March 14.
No doubt Grant, will be doing all he can to help Australia find the back of the net.
