Improved soccer performance as side goes down 6-3 to Macquarie

30 Apr, 2008 07:54 AM
On approaching the Canowindra Soccer field (Canowindra’s pride memorial ground), it soon became obvious that the weather was less than desirable for soccer conditions. From previous reports, it was clear that the scorelines, which were quite large, were gradually improving in 2 goal increments. This meant that today’s score line would need to be 5 – nil at worst to keep with tradition.

Macquarie fielded a young and energetic team, with a few steady ready to maintain order. Unfortunately, Canowindra lost the toss, which is still under debate as to whether it was rigged or not, as Mr Bob Scott was the referee. As a result of the loss of toss, Canowindra also surrendered the opportunity to run with the wind. Macquarie seized the windy opportunities to put away four relatively fast goals, Our feisty goalie Jess unfortunately went back to her primary roots, swiftly taking out Macquarie’s striker and therefore conceding a penalty kick that was quickly converted bringing the half time score to 5 nil,.

Geordie gave the girls a positive kick up the backside giving the girls the motivation that they needed. But...soon the sky turned grey and just as our spirits were raised the wind shifted blowing directly across the field, Out perfect storm was no longer upon us, and true skill was needed in order to get a goal. 5nil meant we could concede nil goals in the second half. The idea of scoring a few had crept into the back of our minds, however few dared to voice their aspirations.

The whistle blew and the Redbacks took to the field with a glimmer of hope in their hearts.

The wind made it difficult but the defence held strong. Kristy White, Robyn Scott, Eryn Traves and Julie Carmen created a wall that could not be overcome.

The forwards pushed and pushed chasing every opportunity to the frightened Macquarie goalie ahead. Finally...a break in the Macquarie defence and...to Caitlin Walker goal, goal, GOAL!!! Screams bust from the field to the sideline. The girls in Bathurst were scare and were aware that the Canowindra Redbacks were back! No post, no goalie, just sweet, sweet net!

Canowindra can you believe were next to score with a baseball being crisply cleaned up by Renae Lawrence... What a woman!! With all of the excitement Canowindra, just for a second, lost their concentration and the experience of Macquarie allowed them to slot away a cheeky goal, 6-2. But do you think Canowindra would give up? Never. Through the sheer brilliance of the team, Canowindra go the ball through to a speedy Caitlin Walker who slipped away her second goal of the day, 6-3. And that’s how the score remained. What a team, what a town, what a game! Celebrations carried into the evening with Eryn Traves receiving points from the ref for her steady defence, Caitlin Walker receiving player’s player for her amazing goals and with Jo Wilson winning the raffle. Maybe this will be the motivation she needs to get her back onto the field.

Thanks to Geordie, Greg, Barry and Grassy and the endless support from the parents, players and town. Young Lionesses better look out because Canowindra Redbacks have put the poison back into the bite. All of those interested, Canowindra will be playing Young, in Young, at 3.00pm next Sunday.

Go Redbacks!!
