Redbacks at home to Young Lionesses

27 Jun, 2007 07:47 AM
On Sunday, June 24 the Redbacks had a home game against the Young Lionesses.

It was only 2 weeks ago that we played them so we knew what we were up against.

The weather conditions were favourable to both sides with plenty of sunshine and no wind.

The Redbacks were only missing one player, being Renae, and it shows how much you rely on her with her endless running up and down the field.

The first half was a very tight tussle with the much improved Young side playing soccer and the Redbacks having to do a lot of clearing kicks to get out of trouble.

The Lionesses were first to score from a very good corner kick being nudged into the net.

The Redbacks knew that they had to score next or risk an unobtainable scoreline.

As she normally does Taryn stepped up with some brilliant individual work to even the score up, Redbacks 1, Lionesses 1, and that was the half time score.

At half time I could sense the game wasn't going our way with far too many clearing kicks and not enough passing and packing up going on.

Normally this might go on for about half a game and then we play some good soccer so I was hopeful the second half would see us get on top of them.

I told the girls to show some determination and back each other up.

The second half started with the Redbacks showing some glimpses of form but not enough to worry a very well drilled Lionesses side.

The Lionesses don't seem to have any one standout player but play as a side very well.

It was due to this that they were able to score another two goals in the half and keeping the Redbacks scoreless in the second half.

If we want to be competitive for the rest of the season we have to go back to the drawing board and get the little things right.

This loss today was a major dent in top 4 aspirations and is something that we will look at very hard over the next couple of weeks.

Our next game will be at Bathurst on Sunday, July 15.

On Sunday, July 8 the Redbacks will be having a training run at 12.00pm up at the oval followed by an afternoon of lawn bowls at our local bowling club.

The Canowindra Bowling Club is another of our sponsors and the whole team appreciates having them with us again this year.

This week's Player's Player was deservedly won by Kylie Rush who had a great game.

Best and Fairest went this way: 3 points Kim Scott, 2 points Eryn Traves, 1 point Julia Carman.

Hopefully we can learn from today's loss and improve for our next game in a couple of weeks.

Thanks for reading.
