Redbacks on the improve

21 May, 2008 09:34 AM
I was lying in bed last night, reflecting upon the game on Sunday, playing each pass through my head again and again, trying to figure out what changes needed to be made to my own personal game, when...BAM...I remembered that I was meant to have this report in by Monday afternoon, and here I was in bed on Monday night. So as a display of my dedication to the Canowindra Redbacks, here I am in the uni library typing my heart away, while I should really be in class learning about second wave feminist views. Well I’m sorry Beverly, but my focus lies here, with the ever improving Redbacks!

You know those really horrible days, those days that you reflect upon in years to come, telling your children about how cold and wet and miserable the weather used to get, nothing like today’s weather. Well, Sunday was one of those days. The girls all met at the waratahs clubhouse, cowering underneath the warmth of the heater, trying hard to block the thoughts of running out into the cold in a matter of minutes. Warm up was more of a keep moving or else risk acquiring frost bight situation. I witnessed girls run faster than they knew how!

Now you may recall that the last time we played Waratahs we were only just defeated 11-0. It need not be said that improvements had been made to the team since their past meeting, but only time would tell just how much of a difference had been made.

The girls played out of their skin keeping the Waratahs scoreless until the 23rd minute. But once the 23rd minute had been reached it appeared as though the Waratahs were able to adapt to the freezing conditions, whilst the Redbacks would have preferred to wind their own web to shelter them from the worsening weather. The Waratahs had to fight hard for their first goal, as Amy Bowman, our player’s player for the week, played out of her skin catching balls and diving for saves all over the place. However once Tahs scored their first goal it was hard for the Redbacks to see the light at the end of the tunnel. At half time it was a dismal 6-0 and the final score read 9-0. A better second half it must be said, however more improvements are still needed to be made.

The Redbacks must remember that Waratahs are the team to beat this year and 9-0 is still an improvement on their previous encounter. A positive attitude should be kept, as every game brings endless advances towards becoming a team to reckon with. 3 points was awarded to Caitlin Walker who had a marvellous game up the front. That flurry of goals is only a few games away, I can feel it.

All of the girls would like to thank everyone who came to the game. We really didn’t expect you to stand on the sideline for the entire game, but the fact that you did is greatly appreciated. Behind every great team is a fantastic support crew and you all played your role marvellously on Sunday!

Our next game is in Bathurst at 3:00pm against Collegians, a team who is yet to feel the wrath of the Canowindra Redbacks.

Anyway, I’d better get to class, as much as I like to think I’m pretty cool, we all know the truth!
