Soccer at Canowindra High

28 Feb, 2007 08:10 AM
A hot, muggy day ensured Canowindra High School's senior boys and girls soccer teams sweated it out at the Sports Trust Oval in their recent matches against Blayney High School.

The senior boys played first, in a great match that saw them build pressure through good passing and team work.

James Agustin scored Canowindra's goal and Ronald Lawrence was a tiger in defense. Nick Guthrie and Nick Daley were stand-out players in the backs while Marcus Noble, Lachlan Jacket and Jacob Hodge all had strong games.

Coach Bob Scott congratulated his team for their attitude. "Despite the loss, team spirit was high and the boys never stopped trying," said Mr Scott.

The senior girls match was another hard fought game in hot and difficult conditions. The girls showed great skills in passing and defence that allowed them to score twice in the first ten minutes.

Melissa Mclean used her speed to score the first goal and Belinda Burn goaled with a clean shot from 15m out.

Blayney played well and gave it their all but were outclassed on the day.

Tilly Berry and Kate Noble showed great leadership, Karina Bennett tackled hard all game and Bec Wilson, Mel McLean and Julia Carman were crucial in setting up Canowindra's goals.

Coach Nick Berry was especially pleased with Peta Edwards in goal.

"She saved the day time and time again with sensational saves in goal," Mr Berry said.

The school wishes to thank Mr Scott and Mr Dernee for refereeing and the members of each team who acted as assistant referees. Thanks also to Mark Brown for helping set up the field.
