Independent Member for Dubbo Dawn Fardell has urged women involved in sport across western NSW to apply for one of the 15 scholarships on offer to attend the 2010 World Conference on Women and Sport from May 20 –23.
The event will be held in Sydney, and will feature some of world sport’s most influential decision makers, including ambassador Cathy Freeman.
Each scholarship is worth $1000, and Miss Fardell has encouraged women in rural areas to apply for the scholarships, which will cover the costs of attending the conference.
“We know the enormous contribution sport has played in the development of country communities and in building self-esteem, confidence and leadership,” Ms Fardell said.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for women involved in sport to hear from members of the United Nations, international and national Olympic committees, and international sports federations.
“A wide range of topics will be covered during the conference including gender equality, financing, health issues, and encouraging sport participation. It will be of enormous benefit to women who are involved in all levels of sport including administration, coaching and officiating.”
NSW Sport and Recreation Minister Kevin Greene said up to five scholarships will be granted to Indigenous women and ten will be awarded to the best applicants from the rest of the community.
“This is a great chance for women involved in sport in NSW, whether administrators,
managers, coaches or officials,” Mr. Greene said.
Mr. Greene said the conference would cover a wide range of topics like, physical activity and health, sports and social change, and engaging generation Y and Z in sport.
Women eligible to apply are:
- Women aged 18 years or over on 12 February 2010
- Permanent residents of New South Wales
- Women currently involved in either a paid or voluntary capacity in the sport, recreation or physical activity industry in NSW.
