Kearns Memorial Day a fun day of golf

10 Oct, 2007 08:20 AM
The Kearns Memorial Family Fun Day will be held on Sunday, October 21 at the Canowindra Golf Club.

This is an 18 hole event in which golfers and non golfers can play.

The "KEARNS MEMORIAL FAMILY FUN DAY" was first held in October 1981, following the passing away of Terry Kearns in that year.

Windsor, as he was known around the town, was a keen sportsman and the family came upon the idea of a "Cricketers versus Golfers" day at the Golf Club as a way of remembering him and celebrating his way of life. The Kearns family donated trophies and prizes for the winning sports group and individuals. The family provided refreshments around the course as well.

Initially the day was mainly contested by the male gender.

However the format was soon changed at the insistence of Ivy, Tony and Darryl (all have now passed away) to include lady players and juniors. More trophies and prizes were added, including one for the person who contributes most to the day.

The day has been held in October every year since 1981 and if memory serves me it has been washed out only once. That was when the little ditch that runs down the middle of the course was awash with water about 60 metres wide.

This year holds another special meaning for the family as Uncle Clarrie, a staunch supporter of the day, passed away recently.

Each year the members of the Kearns family as well as their friends from near and far converge on Canowindra for a weekend of fun. Cheryl, Shayne, Evelyn and Darren invite everyone (whether you are a golfer or not) to join them on Sunday October 21 this year for a day of fun.
