Summer has ended and autumn is upon us - it’s time to get your head out of the hazy days of summer sport and start thinking winter and hockey.
Cowra hockey is played by males and females of all ages and level of experience.
A meeting was held last week to grind out some of the finer details - it wasn’t as well attended as hoped but many decisions were made.
Unfortunately the association still does not have a secretary and as such we will struggle to keep going without one.
All teams are asked to consider a person from their ranks who would be able to fill this position, Lyn will help during the initial settling in period.
Contact the President Glen Anderson on 63424228 if interested.
The 2010 competition will commence on Saturday the April 17, which is the last weekend of the Easter school holiday break.
Team nominations for the seniors must be presented at the next meeting which will be held on March 22, at the Cowra Services Club - 7pm so that a draw can be made.
Registration Days will be held on Wednesday 24 and Thursday March 25, from 4pm - 6pm at the hockey canteen area.
All players, junior, senior, male and female, need to register before the
commencement of the competition.
Hockey for Kids is in three divisions: Players of all skill levels are encouraged to participate.
If there are any queries as to which group your child is best placed please discuss this with the respective division coordinators.
This may be revised as the season
progresses.
Forgetting the ages listed for a minute; players are encouraged to remain with the group best suited to their skills and
confidence.
This is particularly important for new players.
Shin pads and mouth guards are
compulsory at all levels.
Minkey: For the very young, usually under 7. A skills based program
encouraging “having a go”.
Shin pads and sticks for Minkey can be borrowed each Saturday. Time slot: 11.15am
Juniors: Mainly for those turning 11 or younger in the current year.
Older children, especially those new to hockey are encouraged to work within this group to build skills and confidence.
Sessions have both skills and game play components. Team shirts are provided.

“Intermediates” being girls turning 15 or younger and boys turning 14 or younger in the current year However new players to hockey who are older will be considered for play with this group to encourage their skill development and confidence generally.
Existing older players may also request to remain with the ‘intermediate’ teams and this will also be considered if it is deemed beneficial for the ongoing development of the player(s) and/or the division as a whole.
This is a competitive grade with players allocated to teams.
As much as possible the teams are of equal strength to enable a strong and fair competition. This does take a little tweaking over the first couple of weeks and players are not to assume their initial team
placement is their final resting place.
For this reason, parents are asked not to race out and buy team socks.
Team shirts are generally supplied by sponsors. Time: 12.30pm
Players cannot take the field without safety gear.
Mouth guards and shin pads (covered by long socks) are compulsory at all times on the field.
Any questions for Intermediates should be directed to Brenda Hannan 63425761
Children in hockey: Players both new and existing are required to play within their specified age group prior to moving to a high group.
This is to ensure compliance with the association constitution rules but more importantly to ensure players have the opportunity to develop within their age groupings and to maintain a high standard within each division.
Rewriting of the Cowra Hockey Constitution: The constitution has been troublesome for a while and the time has come to rectify it.
A committee was formed last year and they are in the process of writing a
legitimate and accurate constitution based on the previous version of it.
If you would like to read the former
constitution and make suggestions towards it’s up-dated model talk to the President Glen Anderson 63424228 about getting a copy.
Any suggested changes must get to the committee before the May meeting via the canteen or at registration.
On a final note: Cowra Hockey is proud to support a long time player, assistant coach, umpire, canteen worker and all round good person Anna White in the Cowra Youth Ambassador of the Year.
Anna has been associated with Cowra Hockey for many of her young years and we wish her all the best.
See you at the meeting.
