A three pronged attack from the McFarland family fell just short of a sentimental victory in the Kevin McFarland Memorial at the Cowra Harness Racing club’s meeting last Saturday.
Descendants of Kevin McFarland dominated the eight horse field with grand-daughter Michelle driving Northern Delight her husband Deehan driving Sorry I Aint and Kevin’s son-in-law Peter driving veteran pacer Jaypeeo.
Michelle came closest to victory finishing in second place behind the Ben Greenhlagh driven favourite Kyalla Marg.
A lightning move to the front of the field from Michelle and Northern Delight with a lap to go set up a thrilling finish but Kyalla Marg proved too strong challenging before the home turn and holding on to record a three and three quarter metre win.
The win was Kyalla Marg’s second win in a week after a win at Forbes earlier in the week.
Greenhalgh said after the win that whilst the early stages of the race didn’t pan out as he had hoped “it all came together at the end”.
Exotic Sheba and Nowentoholden dead heated for third.
The other feature event on the program, the Charlie Muddle Memorial was taken out by Patho Princess (Ian Quirk) which led from start to finish to record an easy four and a half metre win from Diamond John (Mat Rue) with Dreamsovmine (G Williams) a distant third 13 and three quarter metres further afield.
Patho Princess was having just its second start for Quirk after she was purchased from Victoria.
