Canowindra High School hosted the first round of the traditional Rural Cup. Oberon students travelled to Canowindra both to compete in a challenging range of games and to enjoy the social interaction with their peers.
Oberon students arrived on Thursday morning to meet their hosting billets. The wind blew in some chilly weather, but this did not deter students. The next two days saw great sportsmanship and fine competition in a range of activities, including, basketball, badminton, chess, Rugby League, debating, soccer, touch football, volleyball, tennis, golf, hockey, netball, public speaking, table tennis and softball.
Thursday evening was the night for the social.
"What a tremendous night," enthused students Kaila Millar and Kathleen Slatttery.
"Canowindra student, David Duke, was a fantastic DJ. A great thankyou goes to him for putting on such a terrific show!" reported Mrs Kerryn Myers, the coordinator of the visit. "Everyone had a great time and clearly enjoyed themselves. Oberon even challenged Canowindra to a dance off competition. The dancers could not refuse, as it was a chance to 'strut their stuff' and practise in front of an audience for Western Spectacular."
The early morning start on Friday was in itself a challenge for those who had enjoyed themselves at the social. The weather was better with the sun shinning. A highlight of the day was James ‘Cho" Augustin in the Under 15's Rugby League.
" James played an outstanding game," asserted coach John Cowell, "to run in four amazing tries."
The end result of Rural Cup saw Canowindra victorious with 383 points to Oberon's 278. But, there's no time to pack away the gear, as the next round of the competition will be at the end of next term against Molong.
Thanks must go to Mrs Kerryn Myers and Mr Warren MCKenzie, who with the invaluable help of Year 10, organised and coordinated the visit. The school would also like to thank the community members who volunteered their valuable time to umpire.
A special thankyou to hosting families.
Without you, these helpful interschool visits could not take place.
