This week saw the end of the first round of the competition and what a good start to the season we've had. New sponsors, new faces and the trial of men in the competition have been just a few of the highlights so far.
Meeting: A reminder to all teams that there is a meeting on Monday night starting at 7pm in the Library multi-purpose room. Topics to be discussed include the format of the Senior competition and the result of the men's trial. All teams are reminded that they are to have at least 2 representatives at this meeting.
Attention Under 13 Girls: Any under 13 girls who would like to put their names down for the representative team. Place your name on the sheet at the canteen on Saturday or ring Patricia Malcolm on 63 423398 next week. If there are enough girls we will train on Wednesday afternoon at 4pm in preparation for carnivals.
U/15's: A big thank you and well done to all the trainee umpires, buddies and coaches on the U/15's. Special thanks to the on field players and their coaches who have contributed to the success of our first round. The players in particular have played in very good spirit knowing that they too will have to take their turn at the sometimes daunting task of umpiring. We've had lots of positive feedback about the standard of umpiring so far with everyone involved being very supportive. Thanks to the head umpires for ensuring the games maintain their continuity and safety. Coaches, you are reminded that umpires for the next rounds will not be named so please ensure 4 players are definitely available for your duty. Trainees we ask that you have another go this new round to build on your confidence and expertise. Coaches you are still required to "buddy up". A pleasing result, well done everyone. P.S. The plastic whistles usually have a better sound than those metal ones many of you use, please change if you can
Seniors: First, an ongoing thank you to the Over 16 yrs males who continue to play in good spirit and have certainly picked up the pace of the game. Excellent! Also, you are to be congratulated on your attitude to the short suspension incurred when you have hit the ball instead of the required push. Not easy to remember to "push" in the heat of play but your efforts so far are to be commended, it's made the umpires' job much easier and is very much appreciated, please keep it up! Well done fellas!
"AMAZING": A few players showing the extraordinary skill of being able to "ref" and play at the same time. Strangely enough, it appears to be the players who we've never actually seen umpiring who think they are able to perform this dual task the best. One job at a time please guys. Those few in this category need to take a good hard look at the success in the U/15's. The new U/15's umpires are taking away a positive experience from umpiring because everyone is supportive. The on-field players are participating in good spirit because they know they too will have to take their turn at umpiring. The coaches also back this up by their patience and support even when errors occur. What's the old saying "Do unto others........." You can't play without umpires. Players don't just turn into good umpires over night, they need the opportunity to develop their skills. Most of our umpires have already played and many have coached as well before they turn up to "ref" the game. You can't expect them to always be fresh. It's hard enough maintaining concentration without players or coaches or spectators creating additional distractions. Calling out when you think a breach has occurred is not helping, you are creating more problems. So for the few of you who have forgotten a few basic rules, etiquette or basic common courtesy here we go:
"Off the Foot": Get over it guys, the old "off the foot" rule went out the window about ten years ago. Rule 2005: 9.10 states, "it is not an offence if the ball hits the foot, hand or body of a field player, unless that player or their team benefits from this." The umpire will decide whether benefit has been gained. For a list of situations which equate to benefit gained or not, speak to the Umpires' Convenor. While umpires are encouraged to call out "play on" for 'off the foot' to identify that they have seen it and wish to play on, they don't have to, so DON"T STOP, PLAY THE WHISTLE, don't call out "foot" or wave around! Get over it and on with it!
Keep those match reports coming - put them in the publicity pigeon hole before the end of the day.
Umpires/coaches - please check that the best player's names have been filled in on the card before it is returned to the office.
Cowra Glass 2 v Canowindra Central Motors 2
Cowra Glass: What an even match! Plenty of in-field tussles and fights for ball possession. Jaime Buckmaster had another sensational game at CH and trapped like a Hockeyroo. Clare Watt scored 2 crackers and worked hard all game. The team had a reshuffle this week and seemed to take a while to gel with their new positions but a win is just around the corner guys! Thanks goes to Jamie-Lee Gourlay and Dana Hannan for sharing the goalie position. Best players were Jamie-Lee Gourlay, Ben Jones and Clare Watt.
Central Motors: Goals were scored by Gemma White 1 and Pip Johnson 1. Best players were Amy Tangye, Andrea Davis and Pip Johnson
LJ Hookers 2 v Canowindra Bowling Club 2
CBC: Goal scorers were Bec Wilson 1 and Bronwyn Troy 1. Best players were Keira Mc, Eileen Wilson and Stephanie Scott.
LJ Hookers: Goal scorers were Fergus Carney 1 and Paul Farley 1. Best players were Eric Hutchinson, Paul Farley and Samantha Barham.
CBC played one of their best games so far this season against NCCC/Redbacks on Saturday. It was a fast paced game and CBC defended brilliantly with goalie, Di Mackin, saving some fantastic goals. Stephanie Scott was on fire, trapping the ball and stopping the opposition in their tracks. Bec Wilson showed her dribbling skills and weaved her way through the opposition on a number of occasions, she also scored CBC's first goal. Bronwyn Troy scored CBC's second goal assisted by Rossanne Holmes. All players were exceptional and put in a hundred percent until the very end. Well done.
