High school soccer girls win thrilling semi

21 Jun, 2006 08:05 AM
The Canowindra High School Open Girls Soccer team have secured their place in the Western Region Grand Final by achieving a spectacular win over Bathurst High School in the Western Region Semi-Final last Wednesday.

The girls travelled to Bathurst on a cold frosty morning to compete against an in-form and highly rated Bathurst High team. The game was a nail-biter right from the start with Bathurst throwing everything at Canowindra.

The Canowindra team however was up to the challenge and to the shock of the Bathurst team, showed the great skills, spirit and team work for which the girls are famous!

The Canowindra girls never rested, with outstanding performances from their own "Schwarzer" goal keeper, Leticia Tremain, who constantly made great saves. The captain, Laura McLaughlan, along with the halves, Julia Carman, Stephanie Scott, Kate Noble and Julie Ann Avila fought a valiant and tireless battle to defend and then set up attacks at the Bathurst goal.

Time and time again, the Bathurst forwards threatened, but fullbacks Matilda Berry, Karina Bennett and Kristy White formed a solid wall of defence that always frustrated the Bathurst forwards and only submitting one goal against them. They were aptly supported by Samantha Randell and Michelle Tremain.

In return, the Canowindra girls led their own relentless attack at Bathurst with many courageous attempts to score by "pocket-rocket" Melissa McLean, supported by Rebecca McInnes, Belinda Burn, Toni Wilson and Jamie-Lee Edwards.

By full time, the score was one-all and this score stayed the same after extra time with Melissa McLean scoring the equalizer.

Finally the game settled in "Australia-Uruguay" fashion with a penalty shoot-out. Bathurst could only manage one goal against our keeper Leticia Tremain, whose performance in goal was spectacular and earned her Player of the Match, saving constant shots.

Bathurst was stunned as each of the Canowindra penalty takers stood up to take their shots...with Laura McLaughlan, Melissa McLean and Rebecca McInnes all rifling home three awesome goals which left the Bathurst girls shell-shocked.

Final score, Canowindra 4, Bathurst 2.

Coach Nick Berry and the parents present said that this was one of the most thrilling and courageous performances they have seen and that this game was the "stuff of legends".

The girls now travel to Dubbo this Thursday to compete in the Western Region Grand Final and this is a "déjà vu" feeling for many of the girls in this amazing team. Good luck girls, the High School, your parents and the town are all proud of you!
