The rush is on to replace the lost mouth guards and smelly shin pads for the new hockey season. This Saturday is the big day, don't be late! There has been some 'tweaking' to the U/15's teams so make sure that you check your name and team name in the lists below.
Note - Gill's Girls will be wearing white socks for the competition. Any teams who wish to make uniform changes must consult the president Linda Jonkers first. (Max - Townhouse wears RED Umbro socks)
There have been some significant changes to the format of the competition this season as those team representatives who were at this week's meeting will know.
The senior competition will be run as one grade for at least one complete round. At the end of the round a meeting is scheduled to discuss the pro's and con's and to decide the format of the rest of the competition. The players of NCCC and Redbacks will notice that their teams have been combined in this week's draw - this is due to poor registration numbers for each team - and will play as one team until further notice.
There will be a duty team each week from the U/15's competition. The finer details are included further on in this report and is essential reading for all U/15's and their coaches and parents.
Also, there was discussion at this week's meeting re: allowing male players older than 16yrs to play in the senior competition. There was much debate on this topic and it was decided to give teams two weeks to discuss this issue and a special meeting has been scheduled for Monday May 8th at 7pm at the Cowra Bowling Club to put the issue to a vote. All teams are to have representatives at this meeting.
The Duty Team for U/11's and U/15's Games: The duty team is the team in the U/15's that has the bye for that week. This team will be responsible for providing 4 umpires for the U/11's and U/15's matches. The team coach is to oversee the duty and ensure the umpires are provided.
For this week only the umpires have been individually named.
In future, whether names are provided or not, the duty team MUST provide 4 umpires. They can be team players or anyone else the team coach may deem suitable. They do not have to be experienced! A head umpire will oversee the match. This umpire may blow to overrule or maintain the safety of the match as they see fit. Players should be able to umpire their own age group, and this year will see this trialed within the association. All teams will be required to participate as umpires and act accordingly as players under this new system. Teams failing to provide 4 umpires will lose one competition point for each umpire not provided. Those people who complete their team's duty will be rewarded with a canteen token redeemable for a drink and a hot food item. The duty umpires are required to "warm up" by umpiring the U/11's at 11.45am where they will receive various "tips". They will meet with the U/15's head umpire prior to commencement of the U/15's match and will then umpire an U/15's match. The head umpire will ensure the match is conducted in a controlled manner. A warm down discussion will occur at the end. Junior umpires can have a buddy accompany them on their duty if they wish but this person should be there to assist and support not chat and distract. The team coach should also act as a "buddy".
Don't be afraid, this is new and may seem scary but you know the people you are going to umpire. They will have to take a turn at umpiring just like you. Your team coach is available for support and the head umpires will ensure the game is safe and fair. Bring a whistle if you have one. Dress appropriately- sports shoes not thongs or ugg boots etc. Wear your team shirt for ease of identification. It can be worn over a jumper or jacket if cold. We'd recommend a hat or cap also.

Thanks Jill!
Coaching for U/15's: We still need U/15's coaches. It has been suggested that each senior team could be responsible for one junior side, provide coaching, guidance and support and subsequently utilise the players they are developing to "feed into" their senior side, creating a progression path. This sounds perfect, which teams will be the first to take it on?
Other umpiring stuff: Where indicated, teams must provide either the umpire nominated or a replacement. Where teams fail to do so they will lose competition points and the designated umpire or the team captain will miss playing that day's match or the one which immediately follows. Please do the right thing.
Western Conference All Girls - Parkes this Sunday. There will be will be a bus leaving from the car park at the hockey fields on Sunday morning at a time to be announced on Saturday (the coach may have already contacted you with the time). Good luck girls!! Players take note: Uniforms will be supplied on Sunday ie. shirts, socks and skirts - makes sure that you have mouth guards and shin pads plus your stick! Taking plenty of water is also a good idea - if this weather continues to stay warm you'll need more water than usual. Be prepared for cool weather too.
