On February 24th, the Canowindra High Open Boys' Cricket Team travelled to Yeoval for their first round match against Yeoval Central School in the Davidson Shield knockout competition.
Losing the toss, the Canowindra boys were sent out to field. After Nick Guthrie picked up the first wicket, he and fellow opener Josh Duncan came up against some hard-hitting batsmen.
First change bowlers Kane Trayhurn and Peter Guthrie slowed down the scoring, and it wasn't long before Kane had his first wicket. He continued to bowl well, and quickly picked up four more wickets. Adam Parker also picked up a wicket before Kane knocked over the last three. After an amazing spell of spin bowling Kane finished with a fantastic 8/29.
Canowindra played really well in the field, taking some good catches and bowling Yeoval out for 108.
Canowindra's start was slow, and after losing openers Mat Codner and James Agustin, Pete and Nick Guthrie added 23 before Peter was out for 9. Nick Daly came in and hit a quick 11 and Nick Guthrie followed for 10. Joe Read came and went without scoring, and it wasn't looking good for the Canowindra boys.
Kane Trayhurn and Nick Whatman then began a match-saving partnership, and when man of the match Trayhurn was out for 35, there was little left to do. Nick Whatman and Brydon Hughes passed the score with two wickets in hand, with Whatman remaining at the crease with a well-made 20 not out.
This was a great comeback win for the boys, and they are looking forward to the next round when they play either Condobolin or Forbes.
