On her way to the top

CANOWINDRA's Veronica Wallington is the top Australian junior women's qualifier for the World Mountain Running Trophy after breaking the junior women's record at the Australian Mountain Running Championships on Saturday.

Wallington ran the 4.7km course at Canberra's Mt Majura in 22.09 minutes to set the new benchmark, finishing nearly two minutes ahead of Lara Tamsett (23.58) from the Sydney University club.

It is the third record in succession Wallington has broken after she smashed the open women's records in both the Great Volcanic Mountain Challenge at Mt Canobolas in March and the ACT Mountain

Running Championships in May.

The second record was set on the same Mt Majura course as Saturday's race so Wallington knew she would go close to setting the pace again over the shorter 4.7km course.

"That's the best one and getting the record too was a bit more of a bonus,"

Wallington said of her most recent win.

"I knew that I had a shot at it

because from my last race, both of my laps were about the record pace but I still didn't think I would get first because I knew I was racing some of the girls from the top of the state.

"So I was surprised and I had to sort of keep trying to telling myself I could have a chance."

Knowledge of the course was an advantage for Wallington as she knew when to accelerate and when was the best time to leave the field behind.

"Before the race I was trying to go over all of the bits that I had done before and then once I got there I knew how far it was until I turned around and started doing the downhill...that helped," Wallington said.

Although she is the fastest qualifier, Wallington is unsure whether she will be able to take her place at the World Mountain Running Trophy race at Ovronnaz, Switzerland on September 15 because of the costs involved.

She is excited by the prospect of competing on the world stage but understands taking up the opportunity may be too costly.

"It would be so good, it would be a great experience to have the colours for Australia," Wallington said.

In the meantime she will continue running around 50km in her nine weekly training sessions and represent Kinross Wolaroi at the upcoming state cross country event.
