Pythons part of push for two division rugby competition

18 Jan, 2006 08:16 AM
Six Central West Rugby Clubs held a meeting at Molong on Sunday to discuss the current proposed competition.

Following discussions on possible options the clubs - Wellington, Mudgee, Parkes, Forbes, Cowra and Canowindra came up with recommendations to go before the Central West Rugby Board as soon as possible.

The clubs' recommendations are that the competition be played in two divisions. First Division consists of clubs nominating Colts and three grades. Second Division nominating Colts and two grades.

This would see the finals of the Blowes Cup played between the leading four clubs from each division, Thus an eight-team final series.

Benefits of this competition allow the teams with three grades having a continuous competition.

A major plus is Colts being developed with Mudgee, Wellington and Canowindra fielding sides in the 2nd Division Competition. While further clubs currently in the President's Cup may develop and seek promotion into the Blowes Cup.

Should this innovation be adopted it would allow the Central West Junior competition to still follow the draw of the senior competition.

The clubs also requested the Board call for further nominations from all clubs to nominate which division they would prefer to play in, should this submission be adopted by the board.

Cowra 1st grade coach Stuart Ogilvy said they should take the proposal favourably.

"It provides an avenue for third grade to play, but more importantly for clubs like Mudgee, Wellington and Canowindra to play colts and not loose all their players to other codes which would happen under previous proposals."

"It allows teams like Canowindra to come into the comp, which will result in rugby in Canowindra to develop.

He said Cowra would probably enter in the second tier.

Sides are pooled together depending on how many sides they enter."

"It will be a good thing for the competition. It will mean shorter home and away season and a longer semi's format, but this is desirable for most clubs."

"The letter proposed supports the Central West's desire to have a third grade competition where they have week to week play."

The meeting further recommended the Board of Central West monitor the situation of players in more than one game each weekend expressing with the duty of care to players by the club (as facilitator) and the Board (controlling body) when players `double up'

How the 2006 Blowes Menswear Cup could look

Three grades and colts:

Bathurst Bulldogs, CSU, Orange Emus, Orange City, Dubbo Rhinos, Dubbo Kangaroos, Narromine Gorillas.

Two grades and Colts:

Cowra Eagles, Wellington Redbacks, Forbes Platypi, Mudgee Wombats, Parkes Boars, Canowindra Pythons.

Top four sides from each competition play-off in a combined final series for the Blowes Menswear Cup

* Should the two tier competition be approved by the Board the real possibility is there for even exciting contests in both tiers which can only boost rugby in the Central West, plus there is something there for anyone who wants to play the code.
