Redbacks defeat Young Lionesses 4 goals to nil

30 Aug, 2006 08:05 AM
On Sunday August 27 the Canowindra Redbacks travelled to Young to play the Young Lionesses.

This game was a game the Redbacks were expected to win and win well.

In front of a very vocal home crowd the coach had the Lionesses very fired up and they started playing a physical and fast game.

The Redbacks defence stood firm and handled everything that was thrown at them.

Eventually the chances came for the Redbacks and golden boot girl Taryn Ashton kicked the first gaol.

From there the Redbacks had enough possession to win five games but in a copy of last week's game the shots were going astray.

It took about 30 minutes of game time before the Redbacks scored again and it was Taryn again who blasted a shot straight at the goalkeeper who couldn't handle the ball and let it slip through.

Redbacks two, Lionesses zero.

With play seesawing up and down the field Young was awarded a penalty shot outside the goal box.

The Young shooter line up the shot and the Redbacks set up their defence. Luckily for the Redbacks the shot hit the crossbar and the Redbacks got out of trouble.

Close call we all though until we were again penalised in exactly the same circumstances by the same linesman.

By this time coach Vince had steam coming out of his ears and if the linesman could read his mind he would have sent Coach Vince off to the Sin Bin.

Again the Young shooter lined up the shot but this time it went over the crossbar.

The Redbacks thought that the only way to get away from this bloke was to keep the ball down the other end so they did and were rewarded with another goal to Taryn to make the score Redbacks three to Lionesses zero.

This ended up being the half time score and normally this would be a good half time score but Coach Vince wasn't a happy camper and explained to the girls that their passing game was very poor and the girls were taking too much time with the ball.

With this in mind the girls took to the field in the second half with full intentions to hammer the Lionesses line.

But alas the game deteriorated to the same level as the end of the first half and the only bright point (to the crowd) was a goal by Lilly Barker.

Lilly plays in the backs and never gets a chance to shoot for goal so noticing that the goalkeeper was well in front of her goal Lilly blasted a kick from near halfway which bounced over the goalkeepers head into the net.

We all went up as one on the sideline as this was Lilly's first goal of the season and what a beauty it was.

Lilly is one of our defensive backs and is an integral part of Coach Vince's plans to take the Redbacks to another grand final.

This made the score Redbacks four to Lionesses zero.

This ended up being the final score.

To the credit of the Redbacks our goalkeeper who happened to be mighty Amanda Wyburn who played the second half in goals for us had to only touch the ball once which says a lot about the defensive structure Coach Vince has moulded with the girls.

Because of the Redbacks defence our goalkeeper sometimes has a very boring job and we all know that Amanda would much prefer to be out on the field than stuck in goals.

Coach Vince knows that Amanda is one of the best goalkeepers in the game and appreciated Amanda reluctantly putting her hand up to help out the side.

Amanda is a strong physical runner when not in goals and threatens whenever she gets the ball.

Not many teams would be able to boast to having a player with her talents in their side.

As I reported last week assistant Coach Troy had his bucks party on Saturday. From all reports, (because Troy wasn't at the game) his skin colour has changed to black and blue after going paint balling at Lithgow.

Here's hoping that Troy recovers from his bruises and is able to come to training on Wednesday night and tell us about the weekend if he remembers any of it.

Coach Vince was also supposed to go paint balling but got wind of a plot against him that was supposed to put him in the same condition as Troy.

Coach Vince as we know has contacts with people in places that can get anything done by whatever means they feel fit, after he received a phone call from uncle Guiseppe telling him of the intended plot he rang Troy and gave him an excuse as to why he could not go.

At last report Uncle Guiseppe's men were trying to track down the mastermind behind the plot and pay him a visit.

To the budding supporters who suggested that they would come watch the games is the players would run around with their shirts over their heads every time a goal was scored, well boys, you nearly missed your chance.

With half an hour before kick off one of the girls asked where are the shirts? A moment of silence and then an "oops" I forgot them oh sh**.

After a mad scurry and some good thinking by the girls we approached the opposition team's management and luckily for us they had a spare strip that we could use so on we went.

Next week we play at home against Bathurst/Eglinton.

The game starts at 1.00pm and we need all the supporters we can get.

The winner of this weeks pizza kindly donated by The Ben Hall Restaurant was Lilly Barker.

Thanks Noelene for that. That's all for this week.
