Soccer side misses grand final spot

20 Sep, 2006 07:47 AM
On Sunday September 17 the Canowindra Redbacks took on Bathurst Collegians at Canowindra for a place in the grand final at Bathurst against the Bathurst City Colts.

The afternoon was sunny and warm, perhaps a little too hot for soccer but better than last Sunday, blowing a gale and freezing.

The Redbacks started well all psyched up for a big match, pressuring Collegians goal.

Play see sawed from one end to the other with both teams having shots at goal but not succeeding until Collegians popped one over the top which eluded our keeper.

Collegians one, Redbacks nil.

This remained the half time score.

Coach Vince gave the team the usual half time pep talk under the shade of the big gum tree.

The second half started much the same way as the first half with play see sawing from one end to the other until the golden boot of Taryn (yes they are gold in colour!) slotted a goal for the Redbacks.

Collegians one, Redbacks one, and the crowd went wild.

For the next ten minutes the Redbacks attacked Collegians goal without success, shots going wide and hitting the top corner of the goal mouth.

But alas as so often happens, Collegians regained possession and broke quickly to the other end of the field on an attacking raid, put up a shot which our keeper caught but was knocked from her grasp and kicked into goal.

Collegians two, Redbacks one.

With the Redbacks never saying die attitude, back they went to halfway to kick off and start all over again.

Once again the Redbacks were attacking Collegians goal and were given a penalty shot right in front.

With kicker Joe subbed off the field, golden boot Taryn stepped up to take the shot. Unfortunately the shot went straight to the keeper.

Collegians two, Redbacks one, and a huge sigh went up from the crowd.

Collegians then sensing they had the upper hand went on the attack again and it was not long until they scored again – Collegians three, Redbacks one.

The Redbacks were not giving up just yet, they kept attacking Collegians goal, but this was not going to be our day, the goals just would not come our way.

Collegians once again took the play to the other end of the field and slotted another goal – Collegians four, Redbacks one.

This was to remain the score at full time.

The Redbacks never gave up and kept trying right to the end. Good on you girls, your coach is really proud of you all.

The four to one score line does not indicate how close the game was.

Best and fairest was Kim Scott, who wins the pizza from Ben Halls Kitchen at the Royal Hotel.

Many thanks to Noelene Ashton for sponsoring the girls.

The grand final will be played next week at Proctor Park in Bathurst, between Bathurst City Colts and Bathurst Collegians.

Anyone who wishes to attend is to please contact Coach Vince on 6344 1004 so a bus can be organised depending on the number who wish to go.

The Canowindra Redbacks would like to thank their sponsors Canowindra Services Club, Luke Clarke Solicitors, Belubula Butchery, Canowindra Pharmacy, Canowindra Bowling Club, Lawrence's IGA and D & E Electrical.

Without your support the Canowindra Redbacks would cease to function.

Many thanks to Bimbo Meluish who placed money over the bar at the Services Club for the girls to have a well earned drink.

The raffle this week was won by the Banished Strapper Grassy who has been well and truly banished for the week, to the coast fishing.

Hope he's in a better mood when he returns!

Congratulations to the Redbacks on another successful year, you did yourselves and your Coach (Vince), Assistant Coach (Troy) and the Banished Strapper (Grassy) and your band of faithful supporters proud.

See you all next year for another good one.

The Banished Strapper's Wife.
