Students get set for swim at Homebush

15 Mar, 2006 07:40 AM
Seven students from Canowindra High School will represent Western Region at the NSW State Swimming Championships as a result of their successful participation in the Western NSW Secondary Swimming Trials in Bathurst earlier this month.

Bonny Wythes, Peta Edwards, Belinda Burn and Alisha Smith were victorious in the 14 year girls' relay.

Three individual swimmers also achieved excellent results.

Nadia Smith will swim in the 13 years 100m butterfly, 15 year old Haydon Hodge will represent in freestyle and butterfly and school captain Laura McLaughlin will put aside her HSC texts to 'power up the pool' in both freestyle and breaststroke.

The successes of these students follows on from the school's earlier, keenly contested School Swimming Carnival and a district meet at Boorowa.

In all 11 students represented Canowindra High School at these regional championships.

The other students who are to be commended for their efforts are Cameron Guihot, Melissa McLean, Adam Watt and Melissa Nash.

"The achievement of these young people is all the more remarkable when we consider their training facilities.

"Canowindra students are restricted to the town's 33m pool that is open for less than half the year," said swimming team manager Owen McLaughlan.

"Other schools have the opportunity to use heated 50m pools 12 months of the year."

The school is very proud of their representatives and takes the opportunity to wish them every success when they swim at the NSW State Swimming Championships at Homebush on April 6, 7 and 8.
