Successful endurance ride for Deanna Trevena

28 Jun, 2006 08:08 AM
Former local rider Deanna Trevena (nee Loomes) has again had a success, this time in Endurance riding. Deanna is the daughter of Max & Mim Loomes and an ex Canowindra Pony Club member. Deanna has been riding in Endurance events for the past three years; however this Quilty buckle has been a much sort after trophy for her cabinet.

The 2006 Tom Quilty Endurance ride saw 307 riders start at midnight on Friday 9th June from Boonah showgrounds in southern Queensland. The Tom Quilty is a 160km endurance ride consisting of 5 legs of varying distances. It is Australia's national and most prestigious endurance ride. The aim is to complete the 100 miles (160kms) in 24 hours with one horse and rider. Its motto is "to complete is to win."

Deanna Trevena riding her grey 10 year old purebred Polish arabian stallion, Warr of the Roses (Rosie) and Roy Barsby riding his grey 7 year old purebred arabian gelding, Dumaresq Zahir (Zee), set off to tackle this demanding but amazing ride.

The first two legs saw them ride off into the night with the full moon trying to cut through the ever increasing cloud cover. By dawn there were scuddy showers softening the drought hardened track ensuring a cool riding temperature for the horses. These showers increased throughout Saturday and as night fell so did the rain.

Deanna and Roy both completed the distance in a riding time of 13.43hrs. Deanna placed 16th out of 75 riders in the Lightweight division and Roy placed 8th out of 65 riders in the Heavyweight division.

This was both horses' first Quilty ride, Deanna's first Quilty buckle and Roy's third buckle. They also placed 8th in the teams event out of 21 teams. The winning time of the ride was an amazing 9hrs 15mintues by international rider Abdulla Karmis Ali Saeed on Tora Blar-Zay.

Warr of the Roses was bred by Coolinda Park at Cowra. Deanna purchased him as a weanling after seeing him as a day old foal at Coolinda Park. Rosie was then started under saddle by Deanna and they had a successful halter and show riding career before turning their hand and hooves to endurance.

Roy's horse Dumaresq Zahir is a homebred gelding from Roy's mare that has now produced four endurance horses for him. Zee has achieved his success in a short 14 months from the first ever endurance training ride.
