Under 10 Pythons remain undefeated

07 Jun, 2006 07:40 AM
Against the beautiful backdrop of St Stanislaus College, Bathurst, the mighty Pythons Under Ten team (who are on the verge of being named 'The Invincibles') took to the field last Sunday for the latest of their rugby carnivals.

As yet undefeated, the team continued on their merry winning way, scoring 27 tried for the day and conceding only two in return.

In a score line that would gladden the heart of any Stannies associates watching, Canowindra defeated Kinross 9 tries to 1 in the first game of the day.

Tim Middleton led by example, his sheer strength and ability resulting in four determined tries as he burst through the Kinross defence time after time. Josh Treyhurn neatly pillaged the ball and used his speed to cross over the time for his first try of the day, and the courageous Jack Beath, master of the palm-off, muscled his way over for another. The final try came from our likeable league convert Brendan 'Dozer' Nash, who has taken to this game like a duck to water. Ben contributed to the defence with his crunching low tackles, and all players were constantly driving the opposition into touch. Levi, George, Pete and Cormac were great picking up loose balls and putting in strong runs.

Game two: Pythons 11 v Bathurst Gold 0. Canowindra put in a dominant performance controlled by their forwards. Xander showed what a speedy little character he can be as he dipped and weaved through the much larger opposition, and George had many terrific attacking runs. Again try machine Tim Middleton was a joy to watch- the older Pythons in the Blowes Menswear team should be rubbing their hands together at the prospect of getting hold of him for first grade in eight years time. Tim scored two great individual tries, and three ably assisted by his team mates, including one from a rapid fire pass from halfback Pete Macnamara.

Josh stepped through the Bathurst defence to score three strong tries, and George, Cormac and Levi added to the tally with their first tries for the day.

While waiting for their third and final game, the Canowindra lads took up position on the hill overlooking the Number One field, and from that vantage point took on all comers who tried to breach their spot. We are pleased to announce that they were not daunted by anything that their Orange City or Emus threw at them (literally!), either on or off the field. It was Emus that the boys took on for their last game, and despite an initial quick try by the dark greens, it was the Pythons who quickly dominated through fabulous defensive play and all-conquering attack.

Josh started the ball rolling with a try from a run that stepped around almost the entire Emus team. His second came from a beautiful run from Levi, and another from a Tim attacking blitz. The addition of another individual try took Josh's total to four. Tim added to the team tally with three, and Pete went close to the try line numerous times, just coming up short. Cormac got a terrific try assisted by his team mates' push, and his mid-air spin out of the grip of the Bathurst defenders left his father flabbergasted on the sideline. This game was much more than a try scoring spree- it really highlighted the strengths of this team as a unit. Levi was terrific at chasing down the opposition and pushing them out, while Michael and George tackled hard. Jack was picking up any loose ball, and Ben and Xander were very speedy in attack. Brendan is as safe as houses in defence, and made many strong runs with the Bathurst players hanging off him. End score was Canowindra's way 9-1( much to the delight of Rob Clulow).

One thing the boys have to remember is to avoid any shirt-sling style tackles, and to keep tackling hard but safe- nothing high and dangerous. Thanks to Middo again for his sensational coaching and Mr. Mac for his assistance with the subbing, and to the Stannies boys who gave up their Sunday morning to referee dozens of little Walla players.
