Canowindra Ray Clements Constructions versus Cowra Motors at McPherson
Canowindra won the toss and elected to bat. After 8 overs the openers P. Guthrie (retired on 26) and N. Whatman (retired on 10) had batted intelligently to put on 40 runs and get the team off to a good start.
Further good batting from B. Traves (retired on 19) and A. Parker (retired on 11) saw the Canowindra innings accelerate to 0 for 73 after 14 overs.
A few quick wickets and once again bat and ball were evenly matched with the Canowindra innings at 4 for 104.
Some aggressive batting from S. Barker (12 not out) and S. Scott (17) saw the completed Canowindra innings reach the health status of 6 for 129 after the allotted 27 overs.
Quality bowling from B. McClintock 2 for 10, C. Mok 1 for 10 and S. Dane 2 for 9 kept the Canowindra batsmen honest.
The Cowra Motors batsmen were aggressive early on in their innings and a 0 for 11 were ahead comparatively after 2 overs, however keeping up this scoring rate became more and more difficult as the Canowindra opening bowlers found their line and length and the game was evenly poised at 1 for 30 after 8 overs with J. Boyce 9, B. McClintock retired on 14 and J. Date looking ominous on 5 not out.
The Canowindra first change bowlers including B. Traves 2 for 6 and R. Blair 2 for 16 soon added to the pressure being applied to the Cowra Motors innings and by the 19th over the score was 6 for 66 with B. Hughes 20 the outstanding middle order batsmen for the Cowra Motors side.
A solid rear guard actions from N. Dennis 6 and S. Dane 13 not out pushed the Cowra Motors total to 8 for 95 after 27 overs.
All the Canowindra bowlers were on their game and steady overs from S. Barker 1 for 4 and M. Traves 2 for 7 at the end of the Cowra Motors Innings maintained good pressure on the Cowra batsmen.
Canowindra should be well pleased with their victory executing their game plan very clinically with all players contributing to a great team effort on the day.
These two sides had each achieved one victory over the other during the season with one game washed out and it was fitting that these two teams met in the final.
The game was played in good spirit with no quarter given or taken.
Both sets of coaches were proud of their players and looked forward to their return to the game for the 2006/2007 season.
Presentation afternoon on Sunday 2-4-2006 at 12.30pm at the Canowindra Services Club will be a good opportunity to share a BBQ lunch and reflect on a successful season.
