Cabonne United’s successful visit to Tiger territory

Canowindra Tigers -v- Cabonne United

Cabonne United came to Tiger territory on Saturday and went away with more wins than losses.

Under 8s

The Under 8s played swift open game this week as they played against a team with plenty of reserves.

Jai Black-Regan joined Jordan Kemper, Codie Reid, Miles McKenzie and Shae Reid for a try scoring spree.

Miles and Codie had many quick hit ups which took the ball closer into Cabonne territory from where Jordan Kemper ran riot as he ran in 5 trys over the game.

Shae Reid wasn't far behind as he scored three trys over the time and then used his kicking foot as he steered two conversions over the crossbar.

Jordan kicked two conversions of his own and excellent defence from all the boys limited Cabonne to six trys and one conversion so the boys should be very proud of their all round game which ensured them a40-26 win.

Under 10s

The 10s game was closer than their younger cubs with once again the 10s falling one try short as Cabonne won 18-12.

It was a close game with both sides intent on winning with bruising defence and nippy attacking runs.

Zak Whitehead, Jake Wythes and Jumara Cutmore were instrumental in this attack with Jordi Brown and William Middleton always backing up the initial hit ups.

Strength in both the hit ups and defence came from the big three, Daniel Friend, Sam Willson and Gene Tarrant.

Jumara Cutmore opened the scoring for the 10s with a signature run which evaded the defence and he scored mid way between uprights and corner.

With Zak's conversion the 10s had six points on the board and went hunting more.

Callum Clyburn scored the second four pointer which Daniel Friend converted for the 10s last try.

The 10s kept trying to the final hooter but could not get over the try line for the third time, so the score remained at 12-18.

Under 12s

The under 12s had their closest game in a while as they battled Cabonne United and ran out winners 10-6.

Team work has become second nature as the players know there will be someone backing up and another to help with the defensive effort.

The backline passing was exemplary with crisp passes starting at the halves combination of Bailey Cain and Rohan Toole and going through the sure hands of Dean Wilson and Alex Willson for Kurt Tidswell or Bradyn Cassidy to make ground wider out.

Jayden Brown, Simon Whatman and Makk McNaught were welcomed back from their Western region representative duties in Sydney last week and it was Jayden who posted the first four pointer after the Tigers forced a turnover and the ball went through three sets of hands before Jayden barged over on the left side of the uprights.

Bradyn converted the try and the 12s led 6-0.

Makk McNaught continued to make more ground as he hit the ball up strongly from the kick off and kept Cabonne on the back foot.

Tim Middleton and Tim Wythes continued their good form as they always made ground with the ball and stopped Cabonne dead whenever they tried to run the ball.

A strong run from Dean Wilson down the right side line took the ball deep into Cabonne territory before he off loaded to a flying Bradyn Cassidy who scored the 12s second try.

The conversion from Rohan just hit the upright and the Tigers led 10-0 at half time.

The attack continued in the second half but Cabonne's defence tightened up and this prevented the 12s from getting across the line in the second half.

However when Cabonne scored their own six pointer mid way through the half they thought they were in with a chance of a win, this was not to be as the Tigers held them out.

A team defensive effort strangled any chance of a Cabonne comeback and the Tigers were always alert for a chance of a break but neither side flinched and the score remained 10-6 at the final hooter.

This week the Canowindra Public School plays the sixth round of the western region schools rugby league knockout at the Oval on Friday morning at 11am.

They play Dubbo South Primary school to see who is the best western region team. We wish the boys the best of luck for a good game.

Under 14s

The Under 14s suffered another big loss as they went down 82-0 to Cabonne, a score which blew out with a quick trys late in the game.

Despite the large loss the combination is continuing to improve and when some of the injured players return scorelines will definitely improve.

This week Blake Willson combined well with Kane Earsman at the back of the scrum as they ganged up in defence and brought Cabonne runners to a stop.

Dan Middleton, Josh Cooney and Luke Watt tackled like dervishes in the back line and they hit the ball up strongly when the Tigers had possession.

At one stage Dan put a pinpoint kick through for a charging Josh and it would have resulted in the teams first score of the game if it had bounced straight ahead rather than turning into touch.

The inclination and will is there in the 14s, they just need a little slice of luck occasionally [and some smaller oppositions] and a win will come their way

Under 16s.

The 16s played with their usual vigour and panache but it wasn't enough this week as they went down by ten points, 28-18.

Brad Bowman opened the game with one bone jarring hit up after another as the Tigers took play into Cabonne's half, but it was Cabonne who slipped through a slight gap in the 16s line and put first points on the board with an unconverted try.

The 16s replied with their own six pointer soon after, as Nick Whatman flew through and caught a James 'Cho' Augustin kick, charged ahead before he off loaded to a sprinting Haydon Hodge who scored near the posts.

Stuart Scott made no mistake with the conversion and the Tigers led 6-4.

Despite last ditch tackles into touch from Nigel Knight, Nick Whatman and Stuart Scott, Cabonne broke the 16s defence twice more before the break and they went to half time with a eight point lead 14-6.

Soon after the break the 16s got one try back as Nick Whatman squeezed through the Cabonne defence in the left corner.

Once again it was Cabonne who again hit back as they scored three more trys and converted the last before the Tigers again gained good forward movement.

It could have been another try but for a superb tackle from Sean Wyburn, who took on a flying winger and tumbled him over the sideline in a beautiful ball and all tackle.

Cho Augustin and Brad Bowman led the fight back with first one, then the other taking the ball up with determination and huge 'don't argue' hit ups.

Brad received his reward when he crossed the line for a try as he trampled any one who tried to stop him.

On the hooter Haydon Hodge split the Cabonne defence with a first rate run before he passed to Karl Maere who continued the move before Cho Augustin finished over the line for a full time score of 28-18 to Cabonne.

This week the junior Tigers make the long trip to West Wyalong and we hope they all come away with a win.
