Cain and Kelly sign with the Tigers for 2007

28 Feb, 2007 08:13 AM
After a very slow start the Canowindra Tigers have received a boost for the 2007 season with the signing of centre Mat Kelly and utility Rhys Cain.

Kelly is a strike centre who can score tries at the drop of a hat and is a big strong young man who is hard to stop.

Rhys Cain is regarded by many as one of the best players in the Woodbridge Cup competition. With a dynamic attacking game and rock solid defence makes Rhys the complete footballer.

Long serving players Andrew Pull and George Delaney have generously agreed to take on the club coaching duties for 2007.

Pull now into his ninth season and Delaney into his 19th season have a total of 26 years of playing for the Tigers and have played well over 400 games between them.

Both men have always worn the Canowindra Jersey with pride and been committed to their team mates.

With a wealth of experience in both codes they are excited about the upcoming season.

"I believe this season will be a great opportunity for Craig Hogan to cement himself as a star of the game and new young players like big second rower Andrew Dunkley and blockbusting outside back Shaun Craven will have great seasons.

"It is great for the older guys in the club to have enthusiastic young players coming through the ranks," Andrew Pull said.

Likewise George Delaney is very pleased with the young players but is looking for more commitment from the squad as a whole.

"Over the last few seasons we have had plenty of players register with the Tigers only to see a number quit half way through the season which is quite expensive to the club and a let down to their team mates.

"This year we are looking for a smaller, more committed squad. A squad that will see the entire season out," George Delaney said.

The coaching staff will be joined by local identity Doug Rice to assist with training on Wednesday and Friday nights.

Doug is well known for his training with Rugby League players and also his fitness training for swimming and various other sports.

The first training night is to be held on Friday March 2 at 7.00pm at Tom Clyburn Oval. Training will conclude with a barbeque for the players.

Any new players are welcome to attend as there are still a few positions left to complete the squad.

Anyone who cannot attend training on Friday but is keen to play, please give Andrew Pull a call on 6344 2244.

Training will continue on Wednesday and Friday nights at 7.00pm at Tom Clyburn Oval.

The competition shapes as a tough one with the inclusion of two new teams into the Woodbridge Cup.

Peak Hill have been training since December and Condobolin are always a strong club.

The competition is scheduled to start in mid April.

If there are any supporters out there who are able to help, please come forward to offer your assistance to the Tigers on game days.

Your help will be appreciated.

Go the Tigers!
