Lacklustre Tigers in narrow win

23 Apr, 2008 07:50 AM
Sunday at 2pm saw the Canowindra Tigers take on Grenfell Goannas at Tom Clyburn Oval.

In what was a mistake riddled and uninspiring opening to the game it was Grenfell who scored the first two tries of the game.

With the Tigers’ minds seemingly on other things it was all Grenfell in the opening exchanges.

Shortly before half time Canowindra hit back with a try to Mat Kelly converted by Rob Burn.

With the Tigers not playing well and Grenfell applying pressure, it took a 90 metre intercept by Damian Kennedy to score under the posts.

Rob Burn converted to enable the Tigers to go to the break leading 12-8. First half injuries to Dave Sargent and Shaun Craven didn’t help the cause; however after last week’s performance against Koorawatha many Tiger’s supporters would have had to double check that it was the same team.

The second half started in better fashion for the Tigers with Damian Kennedy and Rob Burn starting to exercise the control expected of them.

With the Canowindra pack starting to play football Rob Burn took advantage and scooted over for a well deserved try out wide, giving the Tigers a 16-8 lead. Soon after Canowindra worked their way back into Grenfell territory for Moe Bermingham to step through the entire Grenfell pack, straighten up and score a good try next to the posts. With Rob Burns converting Tigers 22 led Grenfell 8.

Once again as has been the case recently Canowindra went back into their shells, perhaps believing they had the game won. Grenfell to their credit realised this and began to mount a creditable fight back with 2 tries, only one converted to trail 22-18 with 15 minutes left in the game. Soon after Rob Burn hit back with his second try of the game and the conversion took the Tigers out to a 28 -18 lead.

In an exciting finish to the match Grenfell scored a converted try to make the score 28-24.

The game finished with Grenfell going 50 meters in a sustained attack which was only thwarted by the sounding of the fulltime bell.

Best for the Tigers was Moe Bermingham who obtained the three best and fairest points as well as players’ player.

Others deserving a mention were front rowers Phil Kelly with 32 tackles and Andrew Pull with 23 tackles and 11 runs.

Canowindra 28 (R.Burn 2, M.Kelly, D.Kennedy, D.Bermingham tries. R.Burn 4 goals) Grenfell 24.

Coach Steve Shorten was not a happy camper after the game and was heard to remark “a well drilled under 8 side would have beaten us”.

Next week the Tigers travel to Manildra to play the Rhinos on Saturday at 4.00pm. An improved showing is anticipated.

Investigating the great traditions of the Canowindra Tigers, we are currently trying to track down the day they were established?

If anyone can help find out that information please contact the club.
