Panthers ready to help juniors

01 Feb, 2012 07:54 AM
NORMALLY at home at the foot of the Blue Mountains, National Rugby League club the Penrith Panthers will be heading west of the Great Dividing Range on Monday to help boost the profile of the sport in Orange.

The Panthers will conduct a junior coaching upgrade at Brendon Sturgeon Oval before visiting schools in Orange on Tuesday then travelling through Group 10 heartland Blayney, Canowindra and Cowra on Wednesday.

It’s the second time in two years Orange has been able to see NRL players up close after the Parramatta Eels, largely due to former five-eighth and CYMS junior Daniel Mortimer’s connection to the region, held an open training session at Waratahs Sportsground in January last year.

Country Rugby League development officer Wade Judd said Orange was privileged to have the calibre of Panthers players making the trip.

“There will be a number of high profile, three or four, NRL players in Orange as well as a couple of under 20s kids,” Judd said.

“Everyone is welcome. There will be plenty of time for kids to get pictures and autographs from the guys.”

Bloomfield’s and Orange CYMS’ under 15s and under 16s sides will take part in an opposed session to help the Panthers conduct a coaching update with junior coaches from both the green and golds and the Tigers.

Judd said coaching updates were a regular part of CRL development.

And Penrith were only too happy to help out.

Judd said Penrith’s trip to regional NSW was an annual event.

“It’s part of their community carnival, it happens every year,” Judd said.

“It is tough to get the amount of players to come out to country areas that we will see on Monday.”

Bloomfield president Andrew Blimka believes rugby league in Orange will benefit greatly from the work of the Panthers early next week.

“It’s going to give us a good idea on what the guys are teaching players in Sydney,” Blimka said.

He welcomed anyone who wanted to come to Brendon Sturgeon Oval on Monday.

“The more the merrier,” Blimka said.

“It’ll be similar to what Parramatta did last season.”

The Panthers will be at Brendon Sturgeon Oval for two hours from 4pm on Monday, January 30.
