Pythons feel the squeeze

18 Aug, 2010 02:19 PM
On Saturday the Canowindra Pythons played host to the Condobolin Rams in the first match of their semi final campaign.

With the Pythons winning the first round match 19-0 then Condo winning the second game 13-9 it was always going to be a tough game for both teams.

With the weather clearing for the game and the pitch still a bit chewed up the ground was still rather heavy under foot.

Canowindra had the wind behind them in the first half though never fully used it to their advantage.

With Adam Nash (pictured) looking like he had scored the opening try of the match, he was deemed held up from the ref.

From the scrum restart Condo managed to scoop up the first of Canowindra’s many mistakes in the first half to put a deep kick down field and the ball bounced back into open space for a Rams player to gather the ball and score a good try down the sideline.

The conversion missed and left the score at 5-0.

The Pythons handling would of being the worst all year for the boys and continued to make mistakes when they had ball in hand.

However Aaron Woolley soon got the boys onto the score board with a penalty goal with only minutes to go in the first half.

However a 5-3 score board at half time was really worst then it sounds with the good breeze going to be against the

Canowindra team in the second half.

In the opening stages of the second half the Canowindra squad had not picked up their intensity and Condo were still making life evan harder by playing some good football themselves.

The Rams kickermanaged to slot two penalty goals over in the first twenty minutes of the second half to take the score to 11-3.

After the second penalty goal it seemed to kick the Pythons into gear a bit and were able to put some decent phases together and get into the rams half and attack their line.

Though still with a few bad choices the boys were not able to get over the line.

With only eight minutes to go Lloydy Jackson was able to break the line and dive over for a 5 pointer. The conversion was unsuccessful to leave the score at 11-8.

The Pythons definitely found another gear after the try and were soon on the attack again with Ronnie Lawrence barging through a gap, with the ever present Joe Wythes there in support receiving a pop ball from Ronnie to make some good metres only to run out of support and get cut down by the Condo defence.

Unfortunately for the Pythons time was not in their favour and the full time whistle was soon blown for Condo to proceed onto the next stage of the finals and Canowindra left to lick their wounds.

This means that Canowindra will now play Blayney this SUNDAY at Canowindra in a do or die elimination final and Condo will travel to Grenfel to play for a spot in the grand final.

Best on field for the Pythons were definitely Rolls Townsend, Joe Wythes and Sam Wythes who made plenty of tackles and a heap of hitups.

So hopefully we will get another good crowd at the oval this SUNDAY to watch the Pythons take on rivals Blayney in what should be a great hit out from both teams who will be fighting to keep their season alive.

Game will kick off at 2:30pm with the usual BBQ and ute bar in full swing.
