Tigers return to winning form

19 Jul, 2006 08:04 AM
The Canowindra Tigers have bounced back into the winners circle with a gutsy display against third placed Molong at Molong on Sunday.

After a terrible run of injuries over previous weeks resulting in losses to last placed Trundle and a big defeated at the hands of Cargo in the local derby.

The Tigers showed plenty of courage to come from behind to win against the Bulls.

The Tigers started with reserves on Sunday only to see themselves down to 13 men once again after only 15 minutes of the game.

Greg Middleton showed plenty of spirit playing with a rib injury for short bursts to give his mates a blow.

Canowindra were the first to score through Dave Sargent. Molong hit back to lead six points to four.

Andrew Pull scored to put Canowindra in front eight points to six. A glut of possession saw Molong go to the half time break leading 16 points to 8.

A strong kicking game from Rob Burn gave Canowindra good positional play for long periods in the second half.

Three good tries by Brian Moss, Pat Kennedy and Moey Bermingham saw Canowindra come from behind to tie the match at 20 all and then at 26 all.

A penalty goal by Rob Burn with two minutes to go saw Canowindra lead for the first time in the match at 28 to 26.

In the final moments of the match Rob Burn finished a great day with the boot kicking a field goal to make the final score 29 to 26.

The wet and slippery conditions made ball handling difficult and it was Canowindra that managed the weather conditions the best in the final quarter of the game to secure the win.

Up front Robert Freiymer, Peter Newell and Brock White led the way continually taking the ball forward.

Rob Burn had a great game at halfback, in particular his kicking game was excellent.

Greg Hogan made a welcome return to the team and gave the Tigers plenty of options in attack having a hand in three of the team's tries.

Craig Carpenter showed plenty of skill from full back with two try assists to his name.

Brock White and Rob Burn led the tackle count with strong efforts.

Try scorers were Dave Sargent, Andrew Pull, Moey Bermingham, Pat Kennedy and Brian Moss.

Rob Burn kicked four goals from six attempts and also kicked on field goal.

The three best and fairest points went to Brock White with two points to Rob Burn and one point to Pat Kennedy.

Player's Player went to Brock White also.

Canowindra travel to Grenfell next week to take on the much improved Goannas.

With two weeks before the semi finals begin the Tigers can finish anywhere from third place to sixth position on the competition ladder.

Slowly players are returning from injury to the squad and hopefully the team will be at full strength by the first semi final game to be held at Canowindra on August 6.

Canowindra would not be in a position to compete each week except for some brave efforts by a number of players that have battled on the last month despite carrying injuries. Well done to those players.

The Woodbridge Cup rugby league competition results for the weekend were:

Cargo 28 defeated Burrangong 6; Canowindra 29 defeated Molong 26; Koorawatha 20 defeated Grenfell 16; Trundle had the bye.

The competition ladder after Round 12 is as follows:

Cargo 22, Burrangong 20, Koorawatha 14, Molong 12, Canowindra 12, Grenfell 8 and Trundle also on 8.

Go the Tigers!
