A Rob Burn field goal two minutes before full time gave the tigers victory in a gripping local derby at Tom Clyburn Oval on Sunday.
It was an exciting local derby with tries going tit for tat at various stages of the game. The Eugowra side ran out Marquee signing David Robinson who played Western Region in 2009, and the tigers had their entire starting pack available.
After a torrid first twenty minutes it was the Tigers that opened the scoring through back rower Brian Moss. Rob Burns converted and the tigers were up 6-0.
Eugowra responded with their very next touch of the ball, through big David Welsh, Tim Ashcroft converted 6-6.
Right on the stroke of half time the Eagles received a penalty ten in from touch and the Eugowra captain potted the goal to have his team leading 8-6 at the break.
After the half time break Rob Burn briefly left the field and young Tom Roth was injected into the team to play centre.
Tom immediately responded with a great try in the right hand corner.
With Rob off the field, it was fullback Gavin Hoad who stepped up to have his first kick for the Tigers.
From the touchline the ball never looked like missing as it sailed over the black dot. Tigers lead 12-8.
Immediately Eugowra’s speedy fullback Sam Malloy responded with Tim Ashcroft’s conversion the Eagles again led 14-12.
Brian Moss lifted the tigers with a great pass to send Tom Roth racing towards the line to score his second try from 40 metres out. Then Brian managed to score his second try after a great run and offload from Kepu Nathan.
Only one conversion was successful and the tigers led 22-14 with 17 minutes to go.
The minutes ticked down but from a scrum play Sam Malloy raced away to score his second try and the Eagles closed the gap to 22-20.
The Tigers surged downfield, a good controlled set saw Karl Maere score wide out to the left on the last tackle. The conversion was unsuccessful and Canowindra led 26-20. When Eugowra fullback Sam Malloy crossed for his third try the scores were locked at 26-26 and the large vocal crowd were well and truly entertained.
The final minutes of the game saw some desperate tigers defence hold out the eagles. With the ball the tigers firstly went for the try before the last tackle play saw Robbie Burns calmly kick the field goal from twenty five metres out.
The Tigers defended one last set before the final siren sounded the end of the epic clash.
Canowindra 27 (Brian Moss 2, Tom Roth 2, Karl Maere tries Rob Burn 2 goals, Gavin Hoad 1 goal. Rob Burn field goal) def Eugowra 26.
