Unsuccessful day for junior Tigers at Parkes

23 May, 2007 08:17 AM
Canowindra Junior Tigers travelled to Pioneer Oval at Parkes on Saturday for an unsuccessful day.

Under 10s

The under 10s game was in two halves as Parkes scored in the first half and Canowindra in the second. Unfortunately Parkes ran out winners 22 to 16.

Parkes ran in five tries in the first half despite the best defensive efforts of Gene Tarrant, Sam Willson and Lewis O'Keefe.

The big three were assisted in the defence by Daniel Friend while Tylah Reid, Jake Wythes and Callum Clyburn kept the Parkes back from running too often.

In the second half after giving Parkes a half time lead of 22 points, the 10s Tigers pulled their attacking boots on.

Jake Wythes was the first with a strong hit up followed soon after by Nathan Whatman and Jordy Brown.

Jake finally cracked the Parkes defence as he pelted through palmed off tacklers and scored on the right side, for a 22 to four scoreline.

Nathan and Jumara Cutmore continued to pile on the pressure before Callum Clyburn took the intercept and went over the line on the left of the posts.

Jordy Brown converted the try which left the Tigers 12 points behind.

The 10s ran out of time but just before the whistle Jumara Cutmore raced across the field and scored in the right corner.

After Gene Tarrant's successful conversion the full time score was 22 to 16 to Parkes.

Under 12s

The under 12s had their lowest score of the year as Parkes ran out winners four to nil.

The 12s opened up strongly as usual with Simon Whatman, Tim Middleton and Makk McNaught making ground up the middle.

With Bailey Cain and Harry Whatman forming the link between defence and attack at dummy half the 12s tried to break Parkes' line but good defence held them out.

The Tigers own defence was strong as Alex Willson showed when he tackled a flying full back over the side line and stopped an attack dead on the spot.

However, it was Parkes who scored and they went to the break with a four point lead.

The 12s attacked with greater purpose after the break as they tried to bridge the gap.

Jayden Brown, Dean Wilson and Tim Wythes took play within centimetres of the line.

Jayden's next hit up saw him over the line but the ball bounced off a defenders leg as Jayden tried to ground the ball.

Sustained pressure in defence kept Parkes pinned in their quarter and after forcing a drop out the 12s Tigers were close again.

Dean Wilson was almost over the line but the officials judged him millimetres short.

After a couple of scrums where no one was sure what they were supposed to do, Kurt Tidswell though he had scored but a double movement was ruled; much to the chagrin of the supporters on the hill above.

The 12s last chance was when Alex Willson was over the line but once again the ball went loose.

Parkes finished up winning by four to nil.

Under 14s

Parkes defeated the 14s Tigers by 62 to 10.

The 14s took to the field minus four players through injury or representative commitments, despite this teamwork improved as the 14s played their best.

Luke Watt seemed to be in two places at once and this week he was joined in that effort by Kain Earsman, Josh Cooney and Troy Jenkins.

Troy in particular appeared to revel in his new responsibility as he took the ball up with vigor anytime he got the ball.

Josh Cooney and Troy formed a formidable combination in the centres and pulled off many tackles which stopped the Parkes attackers gaining ground.

The Tigers only scored of the half came through the 'twin connection' as Blake Willson took the ball up close to the Parkes try line.

Nick Willson received the up and over pass from Blake and scored in the left corner, which made the half time score 30 to four.

After the break Parkes continued to press the Tigers line and sometimes the 12s defence cracked due to quickness of plays.

Luke Watt was replaced after he had literally played to a standstill, this brought the 12s players Simon Whatman and Jayden Brown on the field to add their ‘mongrelness' to the team.

Simon ‘pranced' around on the wing until he claimed his usual spot in the middle of everything and he began to tackle anything that tried to run past.

Jayden remained on the wing where he tackled any Parkes player who dared approach him.

The 14s second try was scored under the posts by Kain Earsman, a fitting reward for his effort in the game which included 19 tackles and 21 hit ups.

Half Matt McLean converted the try and the full time score was 62 to 10.

Under 16s

The 16s Tigers played another hard hitting game but went down to Parkes 28 to 20.

Parkes ran in two quick tries and led 12 to nil before the 16s had settled into their usual rhythm.

James Augustin and Brad Bowman led the way up the middle with Vinny Thurtell looking for yards around the fringe of the ruck.

It was Haydon Hodge who cracked the Parkes defence after sustained pressure from the 16s Tigers.

After the Stuart Scott conversion the Tiger went to the break one converted try in arrears.

The second half opened in the same way as the first with Parkes going over for two tries before the 16s counter attacked.

A pin point pass from James Augustin was caught by Haydon Hodge who cut through the defence and scored under the posts.

Stuart Scott kicked the easy conversion and the 16s were only ten points behind.

Lock Haydon Hodge was on the spot yet again as he stretched through under the defenders and scored in the right corner after good lead up work from his fellow 16s forwards.

Haydon made it a quadrella as he again planted the ball in the right corner after an individual run down the sideline.

The difficult conversion was missed which left the 16s two points behind, a gap that was never closed despite a huge hit up from Brad Steward which saw him held up over the line.

Parkes ran out the winners 28 to 20 after they scored a converted try right on the hooker.

This week the Junior Tigers have the bye with games resuming the week after on June 2.

On June 2 the Junior Tigers will play Grenfell at home.

So come and see them in action.
