Canowindra Junior Pythons headed to Parkes for their latest rugby union gala day and were satisfied with their results although the Winyar Merinos Under 12s had an interesting result in their final game.
Under10s
Before that though the Services Club Under 10s had three spectacular games as they combined with five Parkes boys for the day.
Joe, Robert, Sam, Will and Angus combined with Tom Robson, William Fagan, Brenton Clements, Callum Clyburn and Matthew and Daniel Schuler from the Pythons to form a very strong team.
The first game was against Bathurst was a bit one sided as it took a while for the boys to get used to each others games as Callum and Daniel led the way with penetrating runs.
The Parkes trio of Will, Joe and Robert were always running at their shoulders ready for any off loads which always threatened the Bathurst defence.
Alas the threat never crossed the Bathurst line and Bathurst ran out winners five trys to nil.
However the score would have been much greater if not for last-ditch defence from the Schuler boys, Matthew and Daniel, while Brenton and Dan combined with great head on tackles which stopped Bathurst from scoring again.
The Services Club Under 10s had a much more successful second game against Forbes White as they won four trys to nil.
Dan Schuler led the way with a swift run down the sideline before he passed superbly to Sam from Parkes, who scored wide out.
Callum Clyburn was next over the line after another damaging run from Daniel but with his second try he showed the Wallabies how to score as he sidestepped two Forbes defenders and scored wide out after excellent lead up work from Matthew Schuler.
Brenton Clements then showed off his attacking flair as he bamboozled the Forbes defence with a brilliant burst of speed and went over in the right hand corner.
William Fagan contributed to the rout with some spectacular mauling work and a do or die attitude, which had coach [and father] Michael grinning from ear to ear.
The Services Club 10s third and final game was a close tussle against a well drilled Kinross team which finished up as a two all draw, an indication of the closeness of the game.
Joe from Parkes stopped many Kinross defenders instantly as they were tackled over the sideline which brought play to a swift end and players had to get ready for the lineouts.
The Parkes/Pythons 10s combined well in these and refused to give any free ball to the opposition as they kept their own ball and ran at every opportunity.
William Fagan took the ball up strongly and used his strength to recycle possession for the quicker players to go over the line.
Matt Schuler and Callum Clyburn took full advantage of this as Matt sidestepped his way through attempted tackles and set up Sam from Parkes who scored the 10s first try of the game.
Callum showed he has strength as well as he dragged two Kinross defenders with him over the line for the Pythons second try.
Tom Robson went agonisingly close to his first score of the day as he sprinted down the right touch line and was tackled centimetres from the line by a desperate Kinross defence.
The siren sounded soon after and both sides had to be satisfied with a two all draw.
However the Python Service's Club 10s went home well satisfied with their day's effort, well done boys.
Under 12s
The Winyar Merinos Under 12s had a very successful day with two strong wins from their first two games and their third game pulled up before time due to 'over vigorous defence' from a very 'committed' Bathurst side.
In their first game against Dubbo Roos it was a very close first half as both sides tried to dominate the other but neither managed too as last ditch tackles and strong attack saw play move from quarter to quarter.
The 12s scrum was anchored well with the front row of Edmund O'Ryan, Jack Beath and Stewart Russell provided the base for the ever improving Michael Brown and Lachlan Clulow.
Just after half time the 12s clicked as Josh Trayhurn flew down the sideline and was pulled up just short of the line.
The forwards cleaned out the ball and after superb backline passing Wallace Stranger crossed the line unopposed in the left corner.
Minutes later the lead was two trys as Tim Middleton sidestepped the initail defence and then left the rest of the Dubbo defence floundering in his dust as he placed the ball over the try line.
Tight defence from Georege Carroll, Isaac Beath and Josh Trayhurn ensured that Dubbo only got one try back and the score was 2-1 at the final siren.
Half an hour later and the 12s defeated Orange City/2, 4 trys to 2 in another exhilarteting game.
Orange City scored the first and last trys of the game but in between it was all Python magic as the four years of playing together showed in the team work of the 12s.
This understanding was typified by an attacking move midway through the first half as the ball went to winger Cormac Lamond who threw a brilliant 'hail mary' pass to what appeared to be no one, but Wallace Stranger had looped around and caught the ball and almost scored the teams first try.
This came soon after as Wallace broke through the shaky defence and ran three quarters of the field to score in the middle of the tryline.
In the second half Lachlan Cluow sprinted down the right touch line only to be tackled just short of the line where Josh picked up the ball and went over the line and give the 12s the lead 2-1.
Isaace Beath was the next to break the defence, run away and just before he was stopped he off loaded to Michael Brown who had been backing up all the way and was rewarded with his first try of the game.
His second followed immediately after as he chased Wallace's kick off, gained possession and ran swiftly down the sideline for the teams fourth try.
Jack Beath continued to impress with his great hooking skills, as he won all his own scrums and took three off his City opponent.
The Winyar Merinos third and final game was against a Bathurst juggernaut with two very quick backs who had three trys on the board in the first half despite some desperate defence from Michael Brown, Lachlan Clulow and Tim Middleton.
However another thing Bathurst also excelled at were some over virorous tackles which drew the ire of the referee and caused him to talk to a Bathurst defender just on the break aftera succession of lifting and high tackles.
Bathurst scored two more trys in the second half before the 12s kept play in Bathurst's half with probing runs from Tim Middleton, Wallace Stranger and Jack Beath who snavelled a loose ball from the front of a line out and made 15 metres up field before being pulled down.
Later Lachlan Clulow was on the spot when the ball spilled over the line and he picked it up and placed it down for the Pythons first score of the game.
Soon after the Pythons were bringing the ball out from their line when the referee frustrated with the Bathurst defensive tactics sent a player from the field.
After being warned by the referee that it was supposed to be a non competitive game and there was plenty of room to tackle a player between the chest and the ankle, the referee called the game off five minutes from the end of the game, something which has never happened over the past four years.
The Junior Pythons next gala day is the local one at Canowindra on Sunday 5th August, so come up to the Oval and support the boys on their winning way.
