Strapper steps in to referee the Pythons

23 May, 2007 08:16 AM
On Saturday the Pythons played host to the Blayney Rams.

Ladies day was also held during the match with a great turn out. It was good to see so many people come to watch and cheer the boys on.

Since it was Ladies day the committee decided to raise some money for breast cancer research by donating all monies collected from the raffles. The club would like to thank all businesses that donated the prizes won throughout the day.

Thanks to everyone's support, the ladies raised over $400 to donate to this great cause. Congratulations to everyone that won and also to everyone that bought tickets throughout the day.

On the football side off things, the Pythons were short a few players with injuries on this crucial clash with competition leaders Blayney. However, we still managed to get 21 players for the day, which was great.

With the referee a 'no show', John Hennan, the Python's strapper, had to find his boots and referee for the game. The club would like to thank him very much for doing a great job on such short notice.

So once the players took the field the Pythons won the toss and decided to kick-off. Right from the kick off both teams knew it was going to be a physical and hard game.

The Pythons defended very well through out the first half, with the closest Blayney came to scoring being held up by a great effort from Peter Stacey. The backs continued to play very well and chanced their arm, so to speak, and threw the ball around a bit to find the gaps in defence.

However when Stu Morrow put a chip over the Rams defence Oliver Wythes chased through and put the ball over the line only to be called back for a knock on. That was about the closest the two teams came to scoring in the first half thanks to some really good defence from both the teams on the park.

So with the score at nil all at half time the Pythons had to try and get more ball and play footy down in Blayney's half.

However the first twenty minutes was played pretty much the same as the previous forty, with the Rams throwing everything they had at the Pythons line. only not to break it. The whole Pythons team should be proud of their defence on the weekend.

But after defending so well for the game the Pythons let Blayney over the line with a try coming of a penalty. Blayney converted to make the score 7-0 after about sixty minutes of rugby.

The Pythons must of thought this was full time, as Blayney crossed the line a further three times thanks to some tired defence.

The final score turned out to be 22-0, but did not reflect how close the game was contested, with all the Blayney boys saying they were lucky to get away with a win.

The Pythons just have to improve in a few key areas of our game, and once we perfect them, we will be a real force in the competition.

All the players that played on Saturday really dug in deep and played a really hard and physical game, so congratulations to them.

The best and fairest points for the day went to Peter Stacey, who received three points and also Players Player for leading the forwards well in cleaning out and tackling well.

Two points went to Duncan Wallace for playing yet another brilliant game - the opposition teams seem to target Duncan's wing a bit but are often surprised to see him charge the ball straight back at them.

Dan (what's that on my cheek) Bowd picked up one point for his usual game of ‘no fear' football by putting every thing he has into tackles and hit ups. So well done boys for collecting some very deserved points.

This weekend sees the Pythons at home again against the Geurie Goats. After last week's crowd. it would be good to see every one at the oval again for the 3'oclock kick-off.

The Pythons now have supporters gear for sale including polar fleece jumpers, jackets, vests and caps.

Everyone is very happy with the way they turned out so see Wendy Thurtell at the games to get behind the boys and deck yourselves at in Canowindra Pythons rugby gear.

Go the Pythons!
