400m freestyle at swimming championships

21 Mar, 2007 07:39 AM
Canowindra Swimming Club ran under heavy grey skies and showcased the eight hardy souls who lined up for the 400m championship on Friday night.

Three boys contested the Open 400m freestyle, or twelve laps of the 33m pool, which saw Haydon Hodge finish in 5:21:38 while Luke Watt swam in 7:25:53 and Michael Watt finished third in 8:19:94.

In the girl's open 400m freestyle Nadia Smith came in first [6:37:37] while Madison Vitnell [6:45:61], Pip Johnson, [7:38:15], Samantha Flannery [7:38:99] and Sarncha Smith [7:46:15] were the other place getters.

In the sprint 33m-freestyle Samantha Flannery powered home in the final, in a time of 28 seconds, to easily take home the spoon.

In the final heat of the 33m-backstroke Bailey Cain took home the belly flop certificate of the night, after some competitors just couldn't keep their chins up.

Despite the lateness of the season Josh Flannery showed that he is still improving his times as he chopped 2 seconds off his 33m breaststroke time.

Other two second breaststroke improvers were, Matt Harrison, Stewart Russell and Tim Middleton, while Alicia Earsman removed 2 seconds from her 33m backstroke time.

Rette Tulikaki, Lachlan Clulow, Elijah Beath and Angus Clulow took one second from their breaststroke time while Beatrice Patterson removed 1 second from her previous best for the 33m butterfly.

Tim Middleton showed an astonishing turn of speed in the 66m breaststroke, as he massacred 11 seconds from his former time.

Alicia Earsman removed 7 seconds from her 66m breaststroke, while Lucy Harrison and Sarncha Smith took 5 seconds off their best in the same stroke.

Wallace Stranger improved his 66 'fly time by 4 seconds while Sam Flannery dropped her time over the same stroke by 2 seconds.

Cassie Naylor took 3 seconds off her 66m butterfly time while older sister Sara, lowered her breaststroke time by 2 seconds.

Pip Johnson finished off the improvers of the night with a 3 seconds lowering of her 66m-breaststroke time.

The relay on Friday night was contested by only 20 swimmers, as the low, dark clouds kept many swimmers away.

Nevertheless it was a very close affair as lane one finished in 2:23:38,while the winners in lane two touched in 2:23:11

Claiming the winners pennants for the night were Jodie Ward, Meg Irvine, Josh Flannery, and Alicia Earsman.

This week is the final swimming night for Swimming Club for this season with Presentation Night being the following week on Friday 30th March.
