Back in the swim after a week’s break

28 Feb, 2007 08:08 AM
After a one week lay off Canowindra Swimming club held their backstroke and 200m freestyle championships.

Opening the programme was the Open 200m championships and winning over the two heats were Madison Vitnell in 3.12.42 while Haydon Hodge triumphed in 2.27.43.

The Open 100m backstroke was next and were taken out by Haydon Hodge [1.12.93] and Rossanne Holmes [1.47. 89]

The under 8's 33m backstroke were won by Max Wensley [43.61] and Amelia Holmes [46.98] while in the 9/10's Bailey Cain backstroked to victory in a time of 30.08 and Hannah Watson swam her 33m in32.47.

In the 11/12's Wallace Stranger was the quickest of the boys over the 66m in 68.75 while Madison Vitnell backed up after winning senior girls champion in the district carnival at Cowra earlier on Friday, and won the 11/12's girls 66m backstroke in 1.09.51.

Peta Edwards won the 13/14's girls backstroke championships in 1.03.41 before Brydon Hughes took out the boy's championship in 1.24.98.

Haydon Hodge swam his second 100m backstroke of the night as he won the 15/16 championship in 1.18.63, with A.J swimming alongside for some competition.

Another feature of Championship night is the 33m dash race of the stroke contested that night, i.e. backstroke, where the fastest backstrokers of the night who have swum in the championship get to have a swim off.

After one false start the boy's dash the final finished Haydon Hodge, James Vitnell, Isaac Beath, Dan Middleton, Tim Middleton and Brydon Hughes.

The girl's final was won by Peta Edwards, with Bonny Wythes, Erica Johnson and Rossanne Holmes filling the other places.

The final Championship of the night was the Learn To Swim Cup, open to young swimmers in their first year of Canowindra Swimming Club, Josh Flannery, Amelia Holmes and Taya Crichton were the contestants and Josh was the winner.

Improvers in the 33m freestyle were under 2 seconds and were covered in the spoon semi finals and in a close final [where footy sorts were still on] Hannah Roth won the spoon in a time of 26 seconds.

Special mention needs to be made of Sam Willson who lowered his time in both heat and semi of the spoon and just lost out to Hannah in the final, well done Sam.

Times were still falling in the 33m breaststroke as stroke correction led to lower times with Josh Flannery removing 7 seconds from his 33m time while Bailey Cain lowered his time by 5 seconds.

There was just one improver in the 33m butterfly where Harriet Balcomb lowered her time by 3 seconds, coincidently the same number seconds she took off her 33m backstroke time.

There were no large improvements in the backstroke while Haydon Hodge won the belly flop after a close call from Alisha Smith's cracking belly-flop.

Times tumbled in the 66m freestyle as Lucy Harrison led the way as swam 17 seconds faster than her previous best while Georgia Balcomb and Stewart Russell loped 9 seconds off their previous times.

Catherine Davis and Erica Blanch removed 5 seconds from their times while Wallace Stranger lowered his time by 4 seconds.

Wrapping up the night again was the relay, which saw lane three triumph as Sam Willson, Sara Naylor, Matt Harrison, Pip Johnson, Hannah Watson, James Vitnell and Brydon swim the fastest time.

The week is medley championships so please sign the book before Bron picks it up late Wednesday afternoon.
