Final night of swimming club on Friday

12 Mar, 2008 06:58 AM
At least the weather warmed up for the second last night of swimming club last Friday night.

It was medley championships and a couple of very close races were swum with endurance triumphing over sprints.

In the 33m freestyle, or spoon race, Codie Berroya led the way with a three second improvement in his heat.

Jacob Nash and Stewart Russell followed that up with two second improvements while Brydon Hughes dropped his time by a second to have the equal fastest time for the 33m freestyle from those swimming this year.

The spoon final was a cracker with the race coming down to the last centimetres where Stewart Russell powered home and beat his time by more than three seconds which ruled him out of the spoon.

Winner of the spoon in a personal best time of 22 seconds was Dan Middleton, a just reward for a powerful swim.

Codie Berroya continued his improvement as he knocked eight seconds off his time for the 33m breaststroke while Georgia Brown lowered her time by five seconds.

Jacob Nash then continued his super night as he took eight seconds off his 33m butterfly time, six seconds from his one lap of backstroke and two seconds off his 66m freestyle time.

Harriet Balcomb removed two seconds from her 33m breaststroke and backstroke times while Sophie Huckle swam her lap of backstroke five seconds faster than before.

Curtis Hughes took three seconds from his 33m backstroke time while Nigel Knight took two seconds from his lap of backstroke.

In a close contest Tim Wythes was judged the winner of the belly flop competition this week.

Joe Coady improved his 66m freestyle time by nine seconds, closely followed by Eloise Beath who knocked six seconds off her previous best.

Sam Willson was next with a five second improvement while Erica Blanch and Adelaide Patterson improved their times by three seconds.

The final event for the night was the relay and with Nigel Knight shoehorned into a team for even numbers the winners by four hundredths of a seconds was lane five: Joe Coady, Renae Nash, Tim Middleton, Alex Willson, Erica Blanch and Brydon Hughes.

This week is the final swimming night of swimming club with the 400m freestyle championship as well as the under 10's 200m freestyle, so any wishing to enter these championships please do so before Wednesday afternoon.

The following Friday is Good Friday so no swimming Club while on March 28 is AGM night and presentation night. There are a couple of positions up for grabs none of which is too hard, so could you please consider joining the committee for next season.
