Canowindra Sports Trust has received $22,360 as part of Cabonne Councils Grant for local infrastructure, from the Federal Government.
The $22,360 will be poured directly into the re
surfacing of Canowindra Tennis Courts.
Tennis Club President Ian Guihot was extremely pleased with the funds, stating that it would benefit a lot of the community-
“Resurfacing the courts will allow the tennis club to run the highly popular evening tennis competitions, the schools to again have access to a safe facility, allow for family social outings at the courts and also allow the elderly to return to playing Life Ball at the facility.
“Life Ball was temporarily disbanded 12 months ago when the courts were classed as unsafe for that activity. All in all it is very pleasing”
With the Sports Trust, and the Tennis Club also
pouring funds into the project two courts will be
resurfaced, with some number crunching being done to try and get a third re surfaced.
With the obvious need for resurfacing of the courts, Sports Trust Secretary Andrew Pull was a little
disappointed to miss out on the State Sport and Recreation Grant applied for in November 2008,
“I am disappointed at the outcome of the state grant, the extra funds would have seen possibly four of the courts renewed, we put a lot of effort into this year’s application, we had a lot of help from staff at Cabonne Council and appeared to have a lot of support from our State Member Dawn Fardell,” Andrew said.
“I spoke to Dawn late last week and she was certainly disappointed and frustrated that Canowindra had missed out.
“Despite that we have some funds and will complete what we can”.
President Barry Traves says the grant will help
continue the good work being done by Canowindra Sports Trust.
“The previous 12 months have seen the completion of the lighting project on the northern end of the complex.
“This has made the organisation of training times and sharing of the grounds run more smoothly.
“It has also helped maintain the quality of playing surfaces because there is less wear and tear on the Tom Clyburn Oval.
“A number of minor projects have been completed this year which include the gravelling and grading of the roadway, coring and top dressing of the Tom Clyburn Oval, speed humps on the road way, purging of the
existing bore on the northern fields and the replacing of the light pole in the tennis courts.
“With the Trust also helping the clubs to complete jobs such as the long jump run up and a storage room for senior league”
Barry confirmed that the main objective for this
committee has been to create a good working
relationship with all sporting bodies using the complex and with Cabonne Council.
The executives met with Council on two separate occasions, the first with the General Manager Graham Fleming and Rob Staples (DETS). Graham Fleming expressed that in his opinion the Canowindra Sports Trust should continue administrating the sporting complex. He believed that the Sports Trust was extremely well run, that the sports trust ‘dollar’ could go further than Council’s dollar and by working together on large projects more could be achieved.
Up coming works for the 2009/2010 financial year include the tennis courts, further investigation of a back up water supply for irrigation and the completion of security fencing of the oval. The fencing project will bring to an end the current five year plan ran by the Sports Trust.
All sporting bodies affiliated with the Trust are now encouraged to submit a detailed five year plan to the Trust of what they feel is required to maintain and improve facilities for their sport. This information will make organisation of fundraising and application of grants etc. more efficient.
Finally, Barry took the time to welcome new executive, Vice President Peter Watt and Treasurer Ken Wilson to the Committee, both are affiliated with numerous ‘bodies’ in the community and their involvement is most welcome. A big thankyou went to out going executive Greg McSpadden and Mark Brown for their tireless efforts over many years to get the trust in the positive position it is in today.
