Brisbane is set for a mini heatwave over the weekend, with showers and storms to hit the city and temperatures to reach up to 36 degrees across the southeast.

Monday is set to be the hottest day of the summer, with the mercury to reach 34 degrees in Brisbane and up to 36 degrees in Ipswich and Amberley, Bureau of Meteorology forecaster Vikash Prasad said. Check your local weather forecast

"We have a trough that's going to approach from the west over the weekend," Mr Prasad said.

"The weekend will be mostly fine but there's a chance of a shower tomorrow (Saturday) morning and on Sunday afternoon.

"The trough wil be fairly close to Brisbane on Monday, it will start to get very hot in the morning and we're expecting showers and storms that afternoon."

Temperatures are expected to drop immediately, however, with Tuesday expected to reach 28 degrees, Mr Prasad said.

The average February temperature for Brisbane is 30 degrees.
