Woman dead as car-truck crashes close two highways

Two accidents between trucks and cars, at least one fatal, closed both major northern NSW highways within an hour.

A 77-year-old woman died following a collision between her car and a truck on the Pacific Highway near Nambucca Heads shortly after 3pm yesterday.

The woman from Curtin in the ACT was travelling south when her Toyota Camry and a Kenworth prime mover travelling in the opposite direction collided head-on.

Police said the impact of the collision forced the vehicles off the road into nearby bushland and caused major traffic delays.

The victim died at the scene while the 42-year-old truck driver from Newport escaped injury.

The Pacific Highway remains closed for light vehicles, while heavy vehicles are being let through by traffic controllers.

Only an hour later, another car and truck collision near Tamworth closed the New England Highway.

There have been no confirmed fatalities but police indicated someone may have died.

No further information is available at this stage.

The highway remained closed in both directions at midnight. It will stay closed until further notice.
