Allan began his library career in 1995 after being encouraged by former Librarian Marie Windross to take up the Library Science Degree Course with Edith Cowan University.
By 1996 he was working at the Canowindra Library as a Casual Relief Library Assistant under Branch Library Officer Joanne White, before taking on the permanent role of Canowindra Branch Library Officer in early 2002.
Then 2005 saw some dramatic changes in the local library with its complete refurbishment. Along with Cabonne Council and Central West Libraries, Allan provided input into the layout and design of the service area and spent time chasing up quotes for different parts of the upgrade.
The end result being the best looking library in the Central West at that time. Throughout the years Allan made achievements by increasing numbers of patrons through the door and increasing membership, up by 50 per cent respectively.
Over the years one funny but potentially serious situation was a combined fire drill exercise with Cabonne Council.
"The drill required those in the library to exit onto Gaskill Street and wait in the middle of the road. I was to ring the fire brigade but when I joined the others on the road Merlene James asked if I had rung the fire brigade, to which I replied 'gee whiz I forgot.' So our building would have burnt to the ground," Allan said.
"Looking back over my time I found the position a very rewarding one by being able to serve the public the best way possible and making many long lasting friendships."
Replacing Allan in September is Rossanne Holmes, who for the past 10 years has worked at the library regularly on Saturday mornings, so she is very knowledgeable about the library's collection and patron needs. She is highly qualified, holding degrees in Zoology and Library and Information Management.
Rossanne is keen to maintain the high standard of customer service set by Allan and would welcome any thoughts patrons have on how service could be improved. Non-members of the library are welcome to pop in and see the items in the library's collection. As Rossanne explains,
"Not everyone is aware that public libraries are free and besides books your local library also lends out DVDs, CDs, magazines and audio books. We provide internet access, and have a small local history collection," Rossanne said.
"From the library's website you can obtain online help with homework from professional tutors, and even download free audio books and e-books. A home library service is also provided to those members who are unable to make it to the library."
Allan would like to congratulate Rossanne on her appointment as the Canowindra Branch Library Officer.
"I am sure she will continue the mantra of good service to the public and I wish her well for the future."
