In the course of just over a week, a 23-year-old Sydney man, Alexander Pollard, allegedly spent more than $37,000 in 80 separate purchases.
But police say it wasn't the man's own bank balance bearing the burden.
The 23-year-old was allegedly using a credit card stolen from a Balmain resident, Karl Warkus, who had been the victim of mail theft.
Documents before Newtown Local Court on Thursday allege that between January 7 and January 15, Mr Pollard used the card for a spending spree across Sydney's inner west and south west.
The 23-year-old from Greenacre allegedly made up to 12 purchases, cash withdrawals or money transfers a day with the stolen card, frequenting urban clothing stores such as Loose Threads and Culture Kings, Officeworks, department stores including Kmart and David Jones, and hardware stores including Masters Home Improvement at Chullora and Bunnings Warehouse at Ashfield.
The man also allegedly splashed out at fast food outlets across the inner west, spending hundreds of dollars at Hungry Jacks, McDonalds and Oporto.
Police say that, following a report from Mr Warkus, officers from the Anti Theft Team tracked Mr Pollard to a shop on Darling Street, Balmain, about 11am on Wednesday.
When officers attempted to arrest the man, he allegedly ran from the shop and charged at a police officer, causing a minor injury.
Soon after he was caught, arrested and taken to Newtown Police Station where he was charged with 80 counts of obtaining benefit by deception, having goods in custody, resisting arrest and assaulting police.
Police allegedly found another credit card in Mr Pollard's possession, belonging to Ms Irinee A Tandri, which they say is suspected to have been stolen.
Mr Pollard appeared briefly in Newtown Local Court on Thursday where his solicitor, Amarande Chauvet, did not apply for bail.
Speaking outside the court, Ms Chauvet said that they had not yet decided whether to fight the charges, and that her client was "going OK" in custody, but that he was "very young".
The matter will return to court on February 4.
