POLICE spent Thursday afternoon trying to determine how a car became lodged on top of two graves in the monumental cemetery in Young.

According to Sergeant Paul Colefax of Young Police Station the police were called to the cemetery at around 12.45pm to discover the gold HQ Premier Sedan sitting atop a double plot in the Methodist portion of the cemetery.
Sergeant Colefax said it appeared the sedan was being towed up Hennessy Street and when it reached the Olympic Highway, broke free of its restraining strap, rolled back down Hennessy Street, entered the cemetery, clipped two gravesites and became lodged on two others, causing damage to a fifth.
He said he was unable to estimate the damage bill but that some of the graves dated back to the 1890s.
Sergeant Colefax said nobody was injured as a result of the incident, and alcohol and speed were ruled out as factors contributing to the accident.
The 23-year-old driver, a Young man, was issued a penalty notice for having an unsecured load.
A crane was used to remove the car.
