NSW SES Central West Region Controller Craig Ronan said "unless more members of the Canowindra community join and support their local SES Unit, it may close".
"Canowindra can suffer from flooding and storms as we have already seen [last] week, both of which can cause widespread damage. Without an SES Unit in Canowindra the community would be worse off," said Mr Ronan.
The core role of the NSW SES is to respond to flood and storm events providing emergency assistance to residents that need help. However, there are many other support roles which assist other emergency service agencies. This makes the NSW SES a highly versatile and diverse volunteer organisation, welcoming members from all walks of life and ages.
As an SES volunteer there are many useful skills that can be learnt, some of which can be used in the workplace. In addition there is the satisfaction of helping your community during a disaster and making a real difference.
The NSW SES offers free training and volunteers are provided with the necessary uniforms and equipment required. Many roles in the SES do not require high levels of physical fitness - just a desire to help your community and an ability to attend regular training.
"The best part about volunteering is the feeling of knowing a difference has been made; when you've been able to provide emergency assistance to someone in need. There's nothing quite like that," said Mr Ronan.
As a NSW SES volunteer the opportunities are endless.
You can help save the Canowindra Unit and the potentially life-saving services that it provides by becoming a member of the Canowindra SES Unit.
The NSW SES invites the residents of Canowindra who are interested in joining the Canowindra Unit to an 'Open Day' being held on Sunday, 13 September 2015, between 11am and 2pm. The Open Day will include a free sausage sizzle.
Members of the community are encouraged to come along and take part in the Open Day at the Canowindra Unit Headquarters located on the corner of Armstrong Street and the Orange Road in Canowindra and learn more about the NSW SES and how they can contribute to their community during floods, storms and other emergencies.
