A rare opportunity to actually handle a genuine Academy Award trophy, popularly known as an Oscar, was one of the highlights of film distributor Richard Payten’s talk for the Australian Federation of Graduate Women Central West over lunch at Canowindra a few weeks ago.

The golden statuette had been presented in Los Angeles in 2011 to See-Saw Films for its highly successful production The King’s Speech.
Richard’s business as a film distributor and producer were intimately connected with the film’s development and he and his wife Lara were in LA for the big occasion.
An enthusiastic group of 70 were served lunch in the newly refurbished Canowindra Services Club.
Richard explained how a film is created from the germ of an idea, financed, distributed and finally circulated and preserved through DVD and television showings.
Richard also recounted a dinner meeting with George Clooney and other film dignitaries in Cannes.
“I thought to myself, this is a long way from home for the boy who started school at Bangaroo,” he joked.
President Anne Holloway is delighted that the event has raised a substantial amount towards the $2000 AFGW Central West HSC Scholarship which is awarded each year to the girl with the highest UAI, living and studying in our target Central West area.

The Australian Federation of Graduate Women’s next event is a dinner at Cowra Services Club on October 26 with Norma Ingram, a Wiradjuri woman from Cowra who has had a distinguished career as an educator and community leader.
