The sky was grey, drops splattered down, on and off, roads were cut, bridges broken. Three women trudged along the old bendy street, gumboots firmly on, towing a farm trolley loaded with the most amazing artworks.

Airing of the Quilts was just about to start its 5th year in Canowindra. Quilts had been sourced from Sydney, Canberra, Forbes, Parkes, Orange, the surrounding villages and Canowindra. There were fat ones, skinny ones, old and new ones, large and very small ones, show winners and those that might have won the show in 1994. All of the quilts have been made with passion and care with the intention of wrapping someone in love.
“This is an amazing weekend – people are so generous and lend us their precious work to hang in shop windows,” organiser Debbie Guihot said.
“We originally started Airing of the Quilts to make a walking trail to showcase the amazing work but to also get people to walk the trail and explore our village.”
With the support of local and regional businesses, Cabonne Council and the Canowindra Business Chamber a brochure and map were developed to highlight the quilters trail and to showcase the many other events being held over the weekend. Weather was unkind and as a result of the wind and rain the Twilight Food and Wine Market had to be cancelled. However the Burns Auction of Charlie McCarron’s classic car collection went ahead as did Moorbel Markets, the Up-Markets and the art exhibitions.
“The community was alive and buzzing. The car auction was action packed as were the other activities and exhibitions. There was something for everyone,” Local photographer Robyn Wilkinson from Federation Fotos said.
Canowindra always puts its best foot forward even in difficult circumstances. While the quilts couldn’t hang from the verandas there were 90 odd throughout the town.
