In groups of three, students had three chances to see how far they could get their creations, with the group of Emily Thomas, Marshall Woods and Eden Hawker placing first.
The team, who named their car “The Bomb”, said they were surprised it managed to travel 7.87m.
“We didn’t make any adjustments in case we’d wreck it,” Emily said.
“The balloon was dragging so we added more bottle tops and it went fast.”
The team made their car out of cardboard, skewers, bottle lids, straws and tinsel for decoration.
The team of Raph Cuddy, Garret Towns and Peter Jones came in second place, with their car “Gears of Fire” travelling 3.41m.
Garret said it was a fun assignment.
“It was really fun, a bit competitive, but fun,” he said.
The team made their car out of cardboard, “loads of tape”, Pringles lid and bamboo skewers as axles.
Amelie Kerr, Skyla Dunkley and Mahalah Read came in third with their car, “The Windrider” with a distance of 2.85m.
They made their car out of cardboard, straws, bottle top lids and masking tape and said the assignment was fun to make.
