Heather will be providing the illustrations for a new children's book The Sorry Tale of Fox and Bear authored by Margrete Lamond and published by Dirt Lane Press. The book is described by the publisher as “a mash-up of several Norwegian folk tales”, and is “the story of two friends who fall out with one another, and about what happens next”. In an interview on the publishers KickStarter page Heather said she hoped to capture the darkness and light of the journey of friendship.
“I’ve been practicing and teaching fine arts for the last 20 years and this is my first adventure into narrative illustration,” she said.
“Using charcoal and pencil I’m attempting to capture the dark ambiguity of the story and to show the darkness and brightness of the journey of friendship.”
“My technique is that I use both the charcoal and the pencil, I create layers of past drawing and mark making this provides a sense of energy and also quite a lot of movement in the characters as well,” she said.
Dirt Lane Press say’s on its KickStarter page that they “believe in the intelligence of child readers and their curiosity about complex emotional experience.”
“This is why we dare to publish books that other publishers deem uncommercial. We publish into formats rarely seen on the shelves, explore challenging themes, evoke layered and nuanced emotion, and promote bold illustration styles”.
To support the book donate to the KickStarter at www.kickstarter.com/projects/foxandbear/the-sorry-tale-of-fox-and-bear-a-story-with-heart.
The author is attempting to raise $10,000 to publish the book. To date just over $6000 has been donated. Gifts are provided for donors depending on the amount they donate to the cause.
