Your chance to take on this prestigious role could start at the 2017 Canowindra Showgirl Competition this September, which is one of the entry competitions for The Land Showgirl competition.
The Showgirl competition is not a beauty pageant. Most importantly the entrants must have a genuine interest in, and knowledge of, rural NSW.
The competition encourages the participation and subsequent awareness of rural women's contribution and involvement in both local communities and rural NSW as a whole.
The competition plays a significant role in the overall development of rural youth with over 500 young women entering the competition annually throughout NSW.
The winner of the first Showgirl competition in 1926 won a silver tray and $200 cash. Since then the competition has grown immensely over it’s 50 year history with sponsorship at a State level now worth over $40,000 in cash and prizes.
Last year’s Canowindra Showgirl, Meg Austin, was able to go all the way to Sydney believing a lack of access to health services was a major issues in country towns.
“We have a really great Community Health Centre, it’s well-equipped with dietitians, physios, councilors, it’s a really, really good service however some other country towns don’t have those same opportunities,” she said.
“Hospitals are really small and really limited and I know a lot of people are forced to travel to Orange for specialist treatment.”
